Objectives familiar with fundamentals of research methods
2. To foster an understanding of various research designs and techniques.
3. To identify various sources of information for literature review and data
collection.
4. To promote an understanding of the ethical dimensions of conducting
applied research.
Course On successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
Outcomes
1. Gained knowledge in applied and theoretical forms of research.
2. Understand to differentiate descriptive, correlation, interpretive and
experimental research methods.
3. Demonstrate the ability to review appropriate literature.
4. Construct an appropriate reference list from scholarly sources of
materials.
5. Gained knowledge to identify appropriate research problems.
6. Demonstrate principles of academic integrity and intellectual ownership.
7. Demonstrate the ability to organize and prepare a manuscript suitable for
publication.
UNIT I RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
An Introduction, objectives, types of research, Research Methods versus Methodology, critical
thinking,Research and Scientific Method, Research Process , formulation of hypotheses and
testing of the same.
UNIT II DATA COLLECTION AND MATHEMATICAL MODELLING
Basic Statistical Distributions and their applications. Sample size determination & sampling
techniques: Correlation and Regression Analysis-Time series analysis: Forecasting methods.
Principles of Experimentation, Basic Experimental Designs, Factorial Designs. Basic concepts of
modeling of Engineering systems – static and dynamic model – Model for prediction and its
limitations. System simulation -- validation. Use of various optimization techniques

Data Collection Introduction, Experiments and Surveys, Collection of Primary Data, Collection
of Secondary Data, Selection of Appropriate Method for Data Collection, Case Study Method
UNIT IV WRITING AND PRESENTATION
Elements of Style. Organization of proposals, Basic knowledge of funding agencies, Research
report writing, Communication skills, Tailoring the presentation to the target audience – Oral
presentations, Poster preparations, Submission of research articles for Publication to Reputed
journals, Thesis writing, and Research report writing. Elements of excellent presentation:
Preparation, Visual and Delivery. Oral Communication skills and Oral defence.

Software for paper formatting like LaTeX/MS Office, Software for detection of Plagiarism.
