MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY
Quarter 1/ Week 3
Motivation: Media Then
• If the Titanic sank somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean, how do you think the news reached people in
England and New York at that time?
- If the Titanic sank somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean, I think the news
were spread and reached people in England and New York through
telegrams or from the survivors who told their experiences to the
media personnel such as news reporter then the news were published
in newspaper.
• Discuss how people used the telegraph and telegrams for faster means of communication during that
time.
- People used the telegraph and telegrams (telegraphy) for faster
means of communication during the time the Titanic is sinking
through long-distance message transmission in which the sender
uses symbolic codes that are known by the recipient rather than a
physical exchange of a message-bearing object.
• If the Titanic sank today, in what format would people receive or read the news?
- If the Titanic sinks today, the news will first be aired on the internet,
followed by television, radio, and newspapers. On April 15, 1912, the
Titanic sank in the early hours of the morning. Consider what would
happen if this happened today: passengers on the ship would be able
to write what happened minutes after the ship collided with an
iceberg! Such events will also go viral on the internet, with social
media platforms broadcasting the event live. The incident will also
become a trending subject, and given how quickly information travels
in today's globe, assistance could have arrived sooner, avoiding the
deaths of over a thousand people.

Evaluation:
Answer the following questions below (2 to 3 sentences only):
• Given the available media that we now have in the world, what are its roles and functions in a
democratic society?
- The media's specific function is to communicate information to the
public, whether unbiased or controlled, in order to establish public
opinion on how the country is run, ensuring that a government retains
a public mandate to govern. Since the media today is open to
anybody, the media now is somehow like the voice of the public, they
wanted their voice be heard through media especially social media.
• In what way does media affect your life (personal, professional, academic, social and others)?
- Media is now a vital part and it plays a significant influence in almost
every aspect of my everyday life. It connects me to global events and
provides me with information such as news, history, and
entertainment. This aids me much in developing a more mature
personality. Now that media is so vast, we only need to turn on our
televisions by pressing a button to obtain all of the information we
desire, or we can simply search on search engines on the internet to
obtain all of the information we require.
