Intro Take attendance, hand back any homework, number cards, and journal entries.
(5 min)
8:50-8:55
Journal Entry How do you learn best? Give examples.
(15 min) While Ss are journaling, T writes on the board:
8:55-9:10 Topic Sentences: Tell me what you’re going to tell me.
Supporting Sentences: Tell me.
Concluding Sentences: Tell me what you told me.
Review Topic Part 1: Write Topic – 1; Controlling Idea – 2 on the board. Section off the first few
Sentences examples for ease.
(20 min) Part 2: Count to 3 and Ss will all answer with 1 or 2 fingers to show which the topic (1
9:10-9:30 finger) and which is the controlling idea (2 fingers).
P. 48
Then write a few examples on the board for topic sentences and leave them there for
class:
1. Cities are exciting places to live.
2. Living alone is good in some ways.
3. There are many reasons to learn a new language.
4. You must prepare carefully before going scuba diving.
5. David Freeman is a good father.
Go over #1 as a review with the class. Then T will use number cards to call on Ss
randomly and ask each S what is the topic or what is the controlling idea of the
sentence.
Emphasize that Topic sentences are to tell the reader what the paragraph is going to
be about.
At this point in the unit, we have covered a lot of material so this review section,
reviewing from 2 lessons prior, is intended to refresh the schema that the students have
begun to internalize at this point.
Review Supporting sentences are sentences that break down the main idea of the topic
Supporting sentence. They give specific details to explain the topic sentence. T tells Ss that
Sentences supporting sentences are like the legs on a table.
(20 min) Have Ss read the paragraph on P. 92 to read the parts of the paragraph. Explain
9:35-9:55 afterwards that all sentences between the topic sentence(s) and conclusion sentence
P. 92 are supporting sentences. Emphasize that supporting sentences should prove why th
topic sentence is true and tell the reader the information that the paragraph is trying
to tell. Then T goes over the example paragraph on P. 92 again.
Continuing a review of paragraph structure. This schema is more fresh and will scaffold
on the review of topic sentences well. It also sets up the continuing material that will ad
the concluding sentence to the paragraph.
Break (15 min) 9:55-10:10
Supporting T points out the topic sentences that are on the board from the review. Ss will write 2
Sentences supporting sentences for each of the first 3 topic sentences to tell why each of the
Practice statements are true. After 10 min (15 if the Ss are struggling) Have them tell a partne
(20 min) their supporting sentences. T walks around checking the sentences throughout the
10:10-10:30 activity.
After a short break, the Ss will come back to finish the review of the supporting
sentences. This will further reinforce what I anticipate what will be the most challenging
part of the sentence structure. This section gives the students extra practice and will hel
to internalize the information.
Concluding T hands out P. 156
Sentences T explains that the concluding sentence tells the reader what they just read. It
(20 min) summarizes the paragraph. Then T reads the paragraph on P. 156.
10:30-10:50 Then T reads the first point about repeating words and then Ss read the example and
P. 156 circle the words that are repeated.
Then T goes over the second point about personal comments. Then Ss read the
example.
T explains that we will focus on repeated words.
In this writing 1 class I will be focusing on only one style of conclusion sentences. This
way, Ss can have a basis for writing a conclusion sentence but we will be able to focus on
only one style.
Concluding T hands out the handout for Practice
Sentences First Ss go through each paragraph and choose the best concluding sentence based on
Practice repeating words. T uses number cards to check the answers.
(20 min) Then Ss will go back through and circle the words that are being repeated in each of
10:50-11:10 the correct sentences. Then T uses number cards to check answers. Give 10 min to
Handout each section.
This practice will give Ss the opportunity to practice matching a concluding sentence to
a paragraph before we move onto the production. It will provide a way to see how a
concluding sentence, in the repeating words style, is going to look and to choose it, givin
them more confidence moving into the production stage.
Concluding Using the paragraph that Ss wrote earlier in the class, Ss will write a concluding
Sentences sentence for each of the 3 examples using the repeat method. Give Ss about 10
Production minutes. Use number cards to have a few Ss read their sentences and check for
(15 min) understanding.
11:10-11:25
Ss now have the opportunity to write their own conclusion sentences based on
paragraphs that they have written previously in class. This will allow for continued
internalization of the material as well as continued practice.
Articles T goes over the rules of A and AN, providing extra examples. Ss do practice 3. T
Presentation / checks with number cards.
Practice
A & An Lao students struggle with the use of articles because there are no articles in Lao. This is
(10 min) a quick presentation and practice for the use of articles. This particular practice is for
11:25-11:35 the use of “a” & “an” and will help Ss to better use them in their sentences.
P. 94-95
Articles Then T goes over the rules of THE, providing extra examples. Ss do practice 4. T
Presentation / checks with number cards.
Practice
The This presentation / practice is a continuation of the last but for the use of “the”
