1 Sources of Water
Introduction
The hydrosphere or the liquid part of the earth, which is called “water
sphere”, covers about 70% of its surface. This is why Earth is called the “blue
planet” because water gives it its characteristic blue color as seen from outer
space.
It includes the oceans, seas, lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, and falls
which are the home of many plants and animals. It is always in motion, just
like the air. It also exists below the ground as groundwater and wells. The
frozen part of it is made of ice called glaciers, ice caps and icebergs.
Presentation
Sources of Water
Water comes from different sources. It may come from open or closed
sources. It may also come from a small body of water or a big body of water.
Rainwater comes from clouds.
1. Seawater is salty. It contains plenty of salt. It is found in the seas and
oceans. Dissolved minerals from rocks are deposited to the seas and
oceans. The most abundant of these minerals is sodium chloride, also
called salt. This makes sea water salty.
Sea Ocean
2. Freshwater is also called surface water. It is found in open but
small bodies of water like rivers, lakes, creeks and ponds. They do
not contain much dissolved minerals. It does not contain salt.
Surface water comes mostly from rain. Rainwater flows from land
into streams.
River Lake
Streams
3. Groundwater is found beneath the earth’s surface. It comes
from water that seeps into the ground. It is the safe source of
water. It is considered the cleanest water and contains plenty of
dissolved minerals which the human body needs.
4. Water may also come from
dams. Most of our water
supplies for domestic use
come from dams. Water from
dams is made safe for
human consumption. It
undergoes several processes
such as filtration, chlorination
and aeration.
5. Other sources of water are clouds, icebergs and glaciers.

Uses of Water
2
Uses of Water
Freshwater is used for cleaning, washing, bathing, preparing food and
other household uses. It sustains plant and animal life. It is used to
water plants. It is given to animals to drink.
Freshwater in in rivers, lakes and springs is used for recreation, like
swimming and boating. Clean rivers and lakes are also a rich source
of shrimps, crabs, and shellfish. It can also be used in farms for
irrigation and livestock, watering and in factories. Rivers and lakes can
also serve as routes of transportation for boats.
Seawater from seas and oceans serves as home to a variety of
organisms. Saltwater can be desalinated to produce water suitable for
human consumption. It is also have some health benefits in humans
like reducing anxiety, strengthens immune system, improves breathing,
and cleans large intestine. Seawater can also be useful in the
treatment of different skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and
others. Oceans and seas can also serve as routes for transportation,
for irrigation, recreational activities, fishing and boating.
Groundwater is used for drinking. It is the safe source of water. It is for
washing, cooking, cleaning, bathing, putting out fire, watering the
plants, swimming, and other activities.
