II. PRESENTATION (Lesson Proper)

This unit begin with the concepts on identity and history to ground you on
the role of how the terms selfhood and colonization affect the country’s artistic production.
Proceeding topics on the National Artists of the Philippines will introduce you the
exemplary lives of Filipinos who have devoted most of their entire lives in the name of art.
The Philippines is blessed with diverse flora and fauna, and is populated by
a multisectoral society with multicultural backgrounds. The Philippines geography, history
and people contribute to the art production that is one of the finest in the world. Learning
the country’s art and its artist will broaden your understanding of who you are and where
you belong, as artist an instrument of identity. Do not fear that art is limited to the artistic
and creative because the need for art, be it the producer or the consumer of it, is stemmed
in all people; the need for beauty and expression is in you.

What is Art/Arts?
It came from the Latin word “ars/artis” which means to do or manmade.
One of the oldest and most important means of expressions developed by man. It
involves personal experiences of an individual accompanied by some intensity of
emotion. It is a medium of expression because through arts we express our ideas,
emotions, feelings, without using words. Creative activity which involves skill or
expertness in handling materials and organizing them into a new.
The Greek philosopher Aristotle may have provided the earliest
assumptions of art as linked to human instinct. In his Poetics, Aristotle claimed that
humans have instinct for imitation and harmony. He described that these instinct
are “lying deep in our nature”. He argued that human beings are “most imitative of
the living creatures,” and through imitations, humans learn and experience
pleasure . Art, then, may be defined as a human pursuit to imitate life and the world
into something pleasing or beautiful.

Importance of Art
 Driven our existence
 Satisfies the needs for personal expression
 Develop our skills to express ourselves
 Challenge us to see things differently
 It unleash our hidden desires and passion
 It can change our ways in life

 To see the truth that we might understand before

 It gives pleasure, satisfaction and gratification

Functions of Art
 To express beauty
 It gives man moment of relaxation and spiritual happiness
 It serves as a channel of man’s passion
 Overcomes the feelings of restlessness and loneliness

Different classifications of Art

1. Performing Arts - something an artist used body as a medium. An art form
that is moving from one place to another.
Example: play, movies, live music, movies/TV, operas, mime, puppetry,
acrobatic, dance, and ballet

2. Visual Arts - usually exist in two dimensional form and stay in one place.
Something that we see and hear.
Example: painting, photography, drawing, films,
sculpture, engraving, wooden materials, silk screen, cartoon, stained glass,
mosaic, and stage setting.

3. Literature - talks about language that affects our imagination and make us
think.
Example: nonfiction, fiction, stage play, poetry, screenplay and song

4. Sculptural - a three dimensional form that we can touch, see, and climb. It
stays in one place.
Example: Monument, Architectural Designs, Rice terraces, Rock Garden,
Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, flower gardens, water fountain, and buildings.

5. Real Art - something that is understandable “what you see is what you get”,
objective and representational.
Example: photography, stage play, dance, sculpture, and architecture

6. Abstract Art - non subject matter, non-representational that we cannot

understand on the part of the audience.
Example: Grey Tree by Piet Mondrian

THE VALUE OF ART

Lois Armani Pleno, Page 5
CONTEMPORARY ARTS Revised: 7/22/2020

- Works of art are valued not only by artists and patrons, but also by entire cultures.
In fact, the periods of history that we tend to identify as the high points of human
achievement are those in which art was most highly valued and encouraged.

DIFFERENT VALUES OF ART

1. Material Value- Works of art may be valued
because they are made of a precious material.
During the Middle Ages in Europe, ancient Greek
bronze statues were not valued for their aesthetic
character, nor for what they might have revealed about
Greek culture. Instead their value lay in the fact that
they could be melted down and reformed into
weapons.

2. Intrinsic Value - A work of art may contain valuable

material, but that is not the primary basis on which its
quality is judged.
“Is it art?” is a familiar question, which expresses the
difficulty of defining “art” and of recognizing the aesthetic
value of an object.

3. Religious Value - One

important way of
communicating Bible
stories and legends of the
saints to a largely illiterate
population was through
the sculptures, paintings,
mosaics, wall hangings,
and stained-glass
windows in churches.
Beyond its didactic
function, the religious
significance of a work of
art may be so great that entire groups of people identify with the object.

4. Nationalistic Value - Works of art have

nationalistic value in as much as they
express the pride and accomplishment of a
particular culture.

CONTEMPORARY ARTS Revised: 7/22/2020

5. Psychological Value - Our

reactions to art span virtually the
entire range of human emotion.
They include pleasure, fright,
amusement, avoidance, and
outrage.
- One of the psychological
aspects of art is its ability to attract
and repel us, and this is not
necessarily a function of whether
or not we find a particular image
aesthetically pleasing.

Different Sources of Art

• Nature • Woman
• Child • Religion
• Emotion • Fruits
• Places • Toys
• Animal • Landscape
• Event • Seascape
• Saints • History
