The document is a final exam for a differential equations course containing 6 tests with multiple parts assessing various types of differential equations. It provides instructions to read carefully, show work, and use black pen. Test I and IV assess homogeneous and linear differential equations, requiring students to find general and particular solutions. Test II and V address exact and Bernoulli's differential equations. Test III involves integrating factors. The word problem in Test VI asks students to calculate the pounds of salt in a mixing tank after specific time periods, and discuss how salt volume changes over time.

Math 226 -Differential Equation Departmental Exam

Edgar B. Manubag, CE, PhD October - 2021

General Instructions: Read and analyze each item carefully. Answer the given
items by providing the necessary information asked for. Use black ball point pen
only. Write all your answers on the provided test booklets. Do not tear pages of
the test booklet

TEST I. Homogeneous Differential Equation. Find the general solution of the

given differential equation. Find the value of the constant of integration C and the
particular solution when initial conditions are given. (25 Points)
1. (x – y) (4x + y) dx + x (5x-y) dy = 0
2. (y2 + 7xy + 16x2) dx + x2 dy = 0; when x=1, y =1

TEST II. Exact Differential Equation. Find the general solution of the given
differential equation. (20 Points)
1. (y2 – 2xy + 6x) dx + (-x2 + 2xy - 2) dy = 0
2. (2xy – tan y) dx + (x2 – x sec2 y) dy = 0

TEST III. Integrating Factor. Find the general solution of the given differential
equation. Find the value of the constant of integration C and the particular
solution when initial conditions are given. (15 Points)

[ y 2+ x2 ( 1−xy ¿−2) ]dy

TEST IV. Linear Differential Equation. Find the general solution of the given
differential equation. Find the value of the constant of integration C and the
particular solution when initial conditions are given. (30 Points)

Test VI. Problem Solving: Solve the given problem. (35 Points)
Problem: Into a 100-gal tank initially filled with fresh water flow 3 gal/min of salt
water containing 2lb of salt per gallon. The solution kept uniform by stirring, flows
out at the same rate. How many pounds of salt will there be in the tank at the end
of:
A. 1 hour and 40 minutes?
B. 2hours?

Also discuss how the volume of salt inside the tank is affected as time increases.
