1st Grade Shape Lesson Plan

This 1st grade math lesson plan lasts 50 minutes and focuses on teaching students to identify basic shapes. The teacher will lead preliminary activities like greetings and checking attendance. Then the students will play a game to motivate shape learning called "Bring Me." Next, the teacher will introduce defining and non-defining shape attributes using a circle as an example. Students will then practice identifying the defining and non-defining attributes of other shapes. They will complete worksheets identifying shapes around their homes and be assessed through a labeling activity. For homework, students must finish the everyday triangle worksheet.

C. INTRODUCTI Class do you know what defining and non-
ON defining attributes means? No ma’am.

There are two types of attributes when

dealing with shapes. Defining attributes are
the trates or the properties of a shape that
makes it unique and distinguishable. On the
other hand, non-definig attributes can be
shapes color, orientation, size, etc.

For example:

Circle

Defining attributes:
 A circle has no sides
 A circle has no edges
 A circle has no corners
 A circle is round

Non-defining attributes:
 The circle is blue
 The circle is big
D. Discussion Now can you give me the defining and non-
defining attributes of this shape?

Triangle

Yes Mica? Mica: The defining attributes are

the triangle has three sides, a
triangle has three edges, and a
triangle has a three corners.

Very good!

The defining attributes of a triangle are:

the triangle has three sides
the triangle has three edges
the triangle has a three corners

Now how about the non-defining attributes? Mica: The non defining attributes
are: the triangle is blue and the
triangle is small.

Very good! But what if I changed the color of …..

the triangle? What is it’s non-defining
attributes now?

Okay, so always remember that although the

triangle may look different, we know that it is
a triangle because it is a flat, closed shapes
with three staight sides and three corners.

Do you understand class? Yes maam!

Now how about you guys? What is a defining

and non-defining attributes about you? Can
you give one?

Yes, Bernard? Bernard: My defining attributes are

I’am a boy and I’am being able to
breath and my non-defining
attributes is I’am small.

Very good! But why do you think that being

small is the non-defining attributes of
Bernard?

It is because when he grows old he will be

bigger. Do you understand class? Yes, maam!

Very good everyone!

2.INDEPENDENT Now, complete the Everyday Rectangles

WORKING worksheet.

Remember that rectangle has four sides , now

search around your house for rectangle
shapes and draw it in your worksheet.

When you’re done pass your worksheet on

me.

V.DIFFERENTIATION
I will give you some construction paper to cut
out shapes and create three items made of
shapes. For example, you could make a house.
paste your items on a sheet of paper.

VI.ASSESSMENT
