II. Oral History

Tragic Chronicle of World War II

Short Introduction

World War II was one of the biggest and deadliest wars in history,

involving not only 1 but more than 30 countries. Also, World War II called

as Second World War it is a conflict that involved virtually every part of the world during

the years 1939–45. The principal belligerents were the Axis powers—Germany, Italy,

and Japan—and the Allies—France, Great Britain, the United States, the Soviet Union,

and, to a lesser extent, China. The war was in many respects a continuation, after an

uneasy 20-year hiatus, of the disputes left unsettled by World War I. The 40,000,000–

50,000,000 deaths incurred in World War II make it the bloodiest conflict, as well as the

largest war, in history.

According to Charles S. Thomas, World War II was the largest conflict in human

history and devastated Europe, Asia, North Africa, and large portions of the Pacific. It

began as two separate wars: one involving Japan against China in the 1930s; the other

involving Germany against Poland, France, and Great Britain in 1939. With the entry of

the United States into both wars in December 1941, the two conflicts merged into a

single global struggle during which a coalition of Allied powers (the United States, the

Soviet Union, Great Britain, China, Free France, and a host of smaller nations) defeated

a coalition of Axis states (Germany, Italy, Japan, and smaller satellites). It’s hard to

imagine that a major month long battle from World War II — one that devastated a large

city, caused more than 100,000 civilian deaths and led to both a historic war crimes trial

and a Supreme Court decision — should have escaped scrutiny until now – Bob Drogin.

Significance of the study

This study focuses on World War II, it is important to pursue this study in order to

know what really happens during the World War II. The legacy of the war would include

the spread of communism from the Soviet Union into Eastern Europe as well as its

eventual triumph in China, and the global shift in power from Europe to two rival

superpowers–the United States and the Soviet Union–that would soon face off against

each other in the Cold War. Also, it is really important for students to study World War

II because it involved many different countries. It must that understand that history

shapes us. They will learn why countries chose to be on the Axis and Allied sides of the

war, and how these relationships were built over time.

Objectives of the study

The following are the objectives that the researchers would like to achieve:

1. To know about World War II.

2. To learn what happened during the World War II.

3. To understand the reason why war stated.

Methodology

Qualitative research is the method being used in this research. This is conducted

through qualitative research since the researchers relied on the data being obtained

from interviews, questionnaires, recordings made in natural settings and documents.

The preparation being done for this are looking for an interviewee, location to

conduct research and making of questionnaires.

Table 1. Questions being conducted
Figure 1. Location choosen

The location the research conducted was at Mr. & Mrs. Murillon residential

house, Purok 6, Brgy. Honrado, San Francisco, Surigao Del Norte. The data is

interpreted by making it more interesting and more meaningful.

Result of the Research

Base on the objectives, through this research it is fully understand that journey of

our great grandparents through the war was never been easy. According to the data

that being collected, it is said that the World War II is defined as one of the deadliest

war being experienced before. Based on this research, there are lot of different kinds of

bombs and guns that being used during the battle period. The Japanese used a double

body plane as their aircraft that will land in Surigao. As the bombs explode and battle

begins the people before started to rattle and look where to hide safe. The World War II

lasted for 4 long years in Philippines. According to respondents the World War II started

because of Magellan and Lapu-lapu. But according to some of the research being done,

World War II started because of the surprise launched attack by the Japanese on the
Philippines just 10 hours after the attack of Pearl Harbor. Their experience with WWII is

very horrible.

Summary

The World War II is the very deadliest war in the history. There were billions of

people are affected with this. There were also lot of people who losses their life. WWII

is also called as the second war in which there are many countries being involved. This

war lasted from 1939-1945 and the reason of this war is the continuation of World War I.

The researcher concluded that the WWII was never been easy to Filipinos. This

research helps a lot to know more about the history. WWII is very traumatic to every

Filipino who witness this horrified historical event.

Recommendation

To the future researchers, these are the recommendations the researchers

considered:

1. Enhance more data in order to make it more understandable.

2. Improve and upgrade the way of survey and make it more detailed.

3. Research and dig more about the World War II.
