20BSCIB02P - Introductory Physics Preparatory Year Engineering Students (S1/2020-2021) Tutorial 2

This document contains 8 physics problems assigned as homework for tutorial session 2. The problems involve calculating forces, accelerations, spring constants, periods of oscillation, frequencies, and angular frequencies using concepts of simple harmonic motion and springs. An additional homework problem involves determining the amplitude, period, frequency, and angular frequency from a displacement-time graph.

20BSCIB02P – Introductory Physics

Preparatory Year Engineering Students (S1/2020-2021)

Tutorial 2
The following problems are assigned for tutorial session 2:

1) A 0.60-kg block attached to a spring with force constant 130 N/m is free to move
on a frictionless, horizontal surface as in Figure 15.1. The block is released from
rest when the spring is stretched 0.13 m. At the instant the block is released, find
(a) the force on the block and (b) its acceleration.
2) When a 4.25-kg object is placed on top of a vertical spring, the spring
compresses a distance of 2.62 cm. What is the force constant of the spring?

3) A vertical spring stretches 3.9 cm when a 10-g object is hung from it. The object
is replaced with a block of mass 25 g that oscillates up and down in simple
harmonic motion. Calculate the period of motion.

4) A block of wood of mass 55.0 g floats in a swimming pool, oscillating up and

down in simple harmonic motion with a frequency of 3.00 Hz. What is the value
of the effective spring constant of the water?

5) Determine the angular frequency of oscillation of a 200 g block that is connected

by a spring to a wall and sliding on a frictionless surface for the three conditions
shown in the figure.

6) When a mass is attached to a vertical spring, the spring is stretched a distance d.

The mass is then pulled down from this position and released. It undergoes 50.0
oscillations in 30.0 s. What was the distance d ?

Homework Problem

The displacement of an
oscillating object of mass m
as a function of time is
shown in the given figure. If
the object is attached to a
spring of force constant 60
N/m determine the
following:

(a) The Amplitude (A);

(b) The periodic time (T);

(c) The frequency (f);

(d) The angular frequency of this motion (w);
