Cummins: Fault Code: 528 PID: P093 SPN: 093 FMI: 2

The document describes troubleshooting steps for fault code 528 related to an alternate torque curve switch circuit. The switch allows selection of up to three preprogrammed torque curves. Troubleshooting includes checking for damaged pins, open/short circuits in the switch and harness connections, and verifying the switch provides the correct resistance values for each position. If the fault code remains after completing all steps, further diagnosis is needed.

ALTERNATE (SWITCHED) TORQUE CURVE SWITCH

CUMMINS CIRCUIT

FAULT CODE: 528

PID: P093
SPN: 093
FMI: 2

Alternate Torque Signal Circuit

DESCRIPTION
The torque curve switch circuit allows the operator to select from
up to three preprogrammed torque curves using a two- or three-
position switch depending on which curve the original equipment
manufacturer (OEM) has provided.
The switch should be monitored for proper operation in diagnostic
tool. If the switch is changing state correctly on the service tool,
then the problem does not lie in the switch circuit. The three-
position switch has three states:
- Position 1 - open
- Position 2 - closed
- Position 3 - 1500-ohm resistance.
The two-position switch has two states:
- Position 1 - open
- Position 2 - closed.

COMPONENT LOCATION
The location of the torque curve switch circuit varies with each
OEM and equipment model. Refer to the OEM manual.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Inspect the OEM harness
and the ECM connector pins for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or expanded pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on the connector
No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 1B No - Repair or replace the OEM harness

Go to 3A

Step 1B) Turn key switch OFF position and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Disconnect the
OEM harness from the torque curve switch. Check for an open circuit. Measure the resistance from pin 39 of
the OEM harness to the appropriate pin of the torque curve selection switch connector harness side.

Less than 10 ohms?

Yes - Go to 1C No - Replace the OEM harness

Go to 3A

Step 1C) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Disconnect the OEM
harness from the torque curve select switch. Check for a short circuit to ground. Measure the resistance
from pin 39 of the OEM harness connector to engine block ground.

More than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 1D No - Replace the OEM harness

Go to 3A

Step 1D) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Disconnect the OEM
harness from the torque curve select switch. Check for a short circuit from pin to pin. Measure the resistance
from pin 39 of the OEM harness connector to all other pins in the connector.

Greater than 100k ohms?

Yes - Go to 2A No - Replace the OEM harness

Go to 3A

Step 2A) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM switch circuit from the OEM. Inspect OEM switch
pins for the following:
• Bent or broken pins
• Pushed back or extended pins
• Corroded pins
• Moisture in or on switch
No damaged pins?

Yes - Go to 2B No - Repair or replace the OEM harness or the OEM

switch, whichever has the damaged pins
Go to 3A

Step 2B) Turn key switch OFF and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Check resistance in
position 2. Position the torque curve switch to the No. 2 position. Measure the resistance from pin 39 of the
OEM harness to the engine block ground.

Less than 10 ohms?

Yes - Go to 2C No - Replace the switch

Go to 3A

Step 2C) Turn key switch to the OFF position and disconnect the OEM harness from the ECM. Check
resistance in position 3. Position the torque curve switch to the No. 3 position. Measure the resistance from
pin 39 of the OEM harness to the engine block ground.
NOTE: Step 2C can only be performed if the OEM has provided a three-position switch.

Between 1000 and 2000 ohms?

Yes - Go to 3A No - Replace the switch

Go to 3A

Step 3A) Connect all components and disable the fault code. Start the engine, and let idle for 1 minute.
Verify that Fault Code 528 is inactive.

Fault Code 528 inactive?

Yes - Go to 3B No - Return to troubleshooting steps or contact local

Cummins Authorized Repair Location if all steps
have been completed and checked again
Go to 1A

Step 3B) Connect all components and clear the inactive fault codes using the diagnostic tool.

All fault codes cleared?

Yes - Repair is complete No - Troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes

with appropriate troubleshooting steps.
