LARO NG LAHI: SIPA
(from the Tagalog word ‘to kick’)

The sport “Sipa” which literally means kick or to kick is

a home-grown national sport. Historically, Sipa is considered
the Philippine national and traditional native sport which
predates the Spanish rule going back to the 15th century.
Both boys and girls play this sport. A single person can play
sipa by himself or herself but there are moves to standardize
the game with rules and teams.

Sipa is similar to Hacky Sack, the footbag game familiar to Americans.

The difference is the item that is kicked. In formal games, a rattan ball is

m
er as
used, but when Filipino kids play at home or in schools they use either a big

co
bunch of rubber bands knotted together or a small metal disk that has a fluffy

eH w
tail of shredded plastic.

o.
rs e
Traditionally, boys kick in front of the body the way you see it in the
ou urc
video above, while girls modestly kick behind the body. Skillful players can
kick it any number of ways. When played informally among friends, the game
is to see who can kick the item the most consecutive number of times. That
o

involves stamina!
aC s
vi y re

Sipa is related to the Indonesian/Malaysian game sepak takraw, and

the sports authorities are trying to develop sipa into a team sport to be played
with a net as sepak takraw is, but that is not how Filipino children traditionally
ed d

play it.

VARIATIONS OF SIPA THAT ARE COMMONLY PRACTICED

1. Washer Version – It is mainly a children’s
is

game where the object being played is made of

Th

lead washer, coin-like object covered with cloth

tied with a rubber band or simply a big bunch of
rubber bands knotted together. Years ago,
sh

children would improvise using native materials

due to limited resources of toys and lack of
money. The objective is to keep kicking the ball
without it touching the ground.

2. Rattan Ball Version – Sipa is also a simple
ball game where the ball for sipa is made of
rattan strips interwoven to form a ball. It’s
hollow inside and is about 4 inches in
diameter. The ball is kicked backwards and
forwards and kept going continuously. It
cannot be touched with any part of the body
except knees, legs and feet. In this case, the
rattan ball can touch the ground.

3. Simplified – Played with equal number of players on each team

between 1 to 4. Game play involves keeping the ball above the ground.
The two teams play against each other until a set number of penalty

m
er as
points (such as the ball bouncing twice on the ground) is reached by

co
one of the teams.

eH w
o.
rs e
However, it is Sipa’s team play variant, called “Sipa Lambatan” that, in
ou urc
accordance with customs and culture of the Philippines, deserves the name
of ‘National Sport’. The game is played on a court surface, about the size of
o

a modern day tennis court, either indoors or outdoors – by 2 teams consisting

aC s

of 1, 2 or 4 players on each side. The aim is to kick the ball (rattan, cane,
vi y re

and wicker) back and forth over a high rise net in the middle of the court. In
this variant the Sipa is allowed to touch the ground. The sport requires speed,
agility and extremely good ball control.

FLYER/PATO
Th

 Washer version: Lead washer coin, strips of cloth, drinking straws, rubber
bands, shredded plastics and/or tying straws
 Rattan Ball Version: A softball made of Rattan
sh

 Simplified Version: Any of the materials stated above and a high rise net
(the same as that of Sepak Takraw)

MECHANICS OF THE GAME
Sipa Bilangan (Washer Version)
1. Sipa Bilangan is played by two teams.
2. First Team to play is determined by toss coin.
3. The flyer is kick up and down, until the ball touches the ground.
4. Point is counted on every kick that is made.

Sipa Lambatan (Simplified Version using Rattan Ball)

Simplified game (one-on-one, two-on-two or four-on-four): a set of
rules determines penalty points (such as the ball bouncing twice on the
ground). The two teams play against each other until a certain number of
penalty points is accrued by one of the teams.

m
er as
The ball should only be touched with the legs from below the knee to

co
the tips of the toes. The Sipa ball can touch the ground, depending on the

eH w
determined method of play.

o.
rs e
ou urc
Mechanics of Sipa when played informally:
1. Each final punch of every level, you will launch it to the air then choose
o

one special kick or punch below these steps. The punches before will
aC s

use your palm.

vi y re

2. There are infinite levels to play it: 1st level will be 5 punches with palm,
2nd level will be 10, 3rd will be 15 and so on, adding 5 each level.
ed d
ar stu

3. Using the soles. Kick it like you will sit with your leg crossed. You
should use your soles to kick it.
is

4. Using the feet (Horse kick). Kick like you're someone innocent, kick
Th

frontward.
5. Using Black Magic. This is the most difficult special kick, kick like a
sh

dancing ballerina, just bending your knees to get your leg to your back
and catch the Sipa.
6. Using the sides of elbows. Side of the elbow is located over the elbow
when you look at your elbow at the sides (the outside part).

CHANGING SPORTS

When former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo approved Republic

Act 9850 -- an Act declaring arnis as the national martial art and sport of the
Philippines on Dec 11, 2009 -- many people reacted negatively, questioning
the change.

Sipa had occupied a place in the subconscious of Filipinos as a people,

that it has become the automatic answer whenever Pinoys enumerate the
national symbols.

It’s one thing, however, to know the national game and it’s another
thing to practice it. Did Filipinos really know sipa? Was sipa the national

m
er as
game in practice or was it just something Pinoys knew at the back of their

co
minds?

eH w
o.
rs e
Perhaps, this is one of the reasons why sipa was replaced by arnis.
ou urc
Elementary schools taught students that sipa is the national sport but it
stopped at that. More schools include arnis in their curricula; hence, more
students familiarized themselves with arnis more than sipa.
o
aC s
vi y re

Another possible reason for the change is that arnis generates more interest
than sipa.

Difference between Sipa and Sepak Takraw

ar stu

It is a common misconception that sepak takraw is the same as sipa.

In some instances, sepak takraw is used synonymously with sipa since the
2 games actually have very similar rules and regulations. Although closely
is

related, in terms of its origins and dynamics, the 2 sports are actually distinct.
Th

The biggest difference, perhaps, is that sipa was our actual national
sport while sepak takraw is a similar sport played mostly in Malaysia,
sh

Thailand, and other neighboring countries.

A sepak game also would require teams of 3 to play it while sipa is

more flexible in terms of the number of players and the scoring system.

MISSING SIPA?
Missing sipa? Don’t worry. There’s an app for that. The first Filipino-
designed app on iTunes and Android was—yep, you guessed it—SIPA:
Street Hacky Sack. The app looks beautiful. It takes the user through a tour
of cultural Manila and encourages the player to pick up virtual litter along the
way.
