Design of Structures-Ii

The document contains 8 questions related to the design of various structural elements including: 1) A simple beam to carry loads of 25kN/m over a 6m span. 2) A plated beam to carry a total UDL of 50kN/m over a 12m span. 3) A T-tie member of a roof truss to carry an axial tensile force of 350kN including design of riveted connection. 4) A two channeled column to carry an axial load of 1000kN over an 8m length with fixed ends.

DESIGN OF STRUCTURES-II

Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 50

Answer any FIVE questions
All questions carry equal marks
Assume suitable data wherever required
Use of I.S Steel Codes & structural tables is permitted
---
1. Design a simple beam for a span of 6m to carry a live load and dead load of
25kN/m. Take support width 350mm. The beam is laterally restrained. Use
fy 250N/mm2.

2. Design a plated beam for a span of 12m to carry a total UDL of 50kN/m,
including self weight. The beam is laterally supported. Sketch the details.
Adopt 16mm  rivets.

3. Design a T-tie member of a roof truss to carry an axial tensile force of

350kN. Design riveted connection also. Use 16mm rivets. Take fy
260N/mm2.

4. Design a two channeled column to carry an axial load of 1000kN. The length
of the column is 8m with both ends fixed. Use fy 280N/mm 2.

5. Design a suitable slab base for a column of ISWB 400 to carry an axial load
of 650kN. Take permissible stress of concrete as 4N/mm 2 and SBC =
250kN/m2. Sketch the details.

6. Design a two tier grillage foundation to carry a load of 2000kN. Take SBC =
300kN/m2. Use fy 250N/mm2. Sketch the details.

7. Design an angle purlin for an industrial shed with trusses spaced at 5m c/c
and purlins at 2mc/c. Take wind load as 1200N/m 2. Use fy 410N/mm 2.
Assume other data. The pitch of the truss is 240.

8. Design a riveted bracket connection for the following details. Use 20mm 
rivets.
