What is an activity?

• An activity is anything you undertake that you feel updates, maintains

or provides you with knowledge
• The activities you undertake should work towards the goals set out in
your development plan, or should be an important unplanned piece of
CPD
• Once you’ve undertaken an activity you should reflect on it and review
how effective it is in achieving your goals
• It is this reflective statement that forms the greatest part of CPD
Did You know?

• CPD isn’t all about receiving new training and attending conferences.
There’s a large variety of different activities you can include, such as:
- Familiarising yourself with new or existing health and safety legislation
- Reading SHP articles
- Making a presentation at a meeting or seminar, just like I am today 👍👍
- Attending meetings held by IOSH membership groups, just as you are
today 👍👍

• You can even include activities that don’t relate to health and safety,
but are vital to your career development nonetheless, such as:
- managing budgets
- building communication, presentation and negotiation skills
- managing the performance and development of others
- building technical skills in related areas.
Live CPD Walk through

Lets now take a look at what we have been working through in this workshop
looks like in reality

CPD Planner
Many of our members find it useful to create a CPD planner to help them manage their CPD record. This gives
them a structured approach to their CPD. An example of an annual CPD planner is shown below.
- Record your activities
- Divide you working year into four quarters
- Set aside 40 minutes at the end of each quarter to upload your CPD activities for the previous three months
If you would like a copy of the Planner, please email [email protected] with ‘CPD Planner Request’ in
the subject line.

5 Steps to Successful CPD

1. Put between 30 and 45 minutes in your diary at least every 3 months

2. Update your development plan for the next three to six months
3. Create new activities to match your plan
4. Reflect on the activities you planned last time and how they met your
development objectives—then repeat the whole process every three to six
months.
5. Create a folder on your desktop where you can store potential evidence for your
activities as this will assist when updating / completing activities.

In order to be considered compliant, please ensure that you update your

CPD at least every six months.
