CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Currently Ormoc City is the cleanest city in Region 8. It is because of the effort of the
government to hire street cleaners which are distributed around the downtown. These street
cleaners are the ones who collect and sweeps waste materials around the city, especially near the
plaza where a lot of people stroll around. However, not only the government and the street
cleaners are contributing to the city's cleanliness but the citizens of Ormoc City as well. What are
the actions done by the citizens? How many percentage of the citizens strolling in the plaza
practices proper waste disposal?
A lot of cities in the country have problems regarding garbage, but Ormoc City is an
exception. The government are taking care of the problem through spreading street vendors
around the city. However, it is not just them who takes part in it but the citizens are cooperating
too. Some citizens are being responsible enough to take care of their wastes. They carry their
garbage, or place it in their pockets or they bring plastic bags to place their waste in and throw it
in a trash bag and trash bins around the area of the plaza. Citizens are being responsible enough
and do their part in maintaining the cleanliness of the community (Clark, Jambeck, and
Townsend; 2006).
This study is essential for it can give the people of Ormoc City ideas on how to properly
dispose their garbage, to find alternative ways in eliminating their garbage and to ensure that the
cleanliness of the community will be maintained. This study mainly focuses on how the practices
of the people in the community can deeply affect, not just our nature but also our health.
Considering the percentage of citizens who practice proper waste disposal will show the
government as well as the people the changes, differences and that every little thing a person
does can help maintain cleanliness in the surrounding. Studying the percentage of people who
practice proper waste disposal is not just a game of numbers, it will show people encourage
people to do the same and will give ideas to other cities on how to handle the problem with
garbage. This study might be the key to solve the unending problem of garbage.
In regard of this, our study entitled "Proper Waste Management of within Ormoc City
Plaza: Positive Effects to the Ormocanons” aims to know how the Ormocanons manage their
wastes within the Ormoc City Plaza. This study is unique in a way that’ll help people learn how
to manage proper disposal, because some people don’t apply proper waste disposal. To spread
the good ways of proper waste disposal to the people who visits the plaza and to help the street
cleaners also we should take responsibility of our actions.
Statement of the Problem
The study focuses on the practices of the people in taking care of their garbage’s
regarding waste management.
This study attempted to sought answers to the following questions:
1. How the ormocanons manage their waste within the Ormoc City Plaza?
2. Is segregation of waste within the Ormoc City plaza important?
Scopes and Delimitations
This study will focus on how to properly dispose of waste. Most people do not know how
to properly dispose of their garbage waste.
This study is conducted only in the Ormoc City Plaza and the people within the Ormoc
City Plaza will practice proper waste disposal.
Significance of the Study
This study aims to determine the percentage or how many ormocanons will throw their
garbage properly in Ormoc City Plaza. This study will benefit to the following:
Street Cleaners. Street cleaners will not have a hard time cleaning and picking up
garbage’s everywhere in the plaza. The street cleaners will be happier because of people
throwing their trashes properly.
The Government. This study would help the government with knowing what strategies
and guidelines they will actualize with regards to appropriate garbage disposal.
The Future Readers. This study will serve as a material to make further research related
to garbage disposal.
The Future Researchers. This study aids to serve as their basis, help and give further
recommendations as for better learning and knowledge, and additional literature for their future
investigations.
Students. It will help them realize proper waste management.
Definition of Terms
For clearer understanding of this study, the following terms are defined conceptually and
operationally.
Waste. is any solid, liquid and gaseous wastes emitted by the people. It could either be
biodegradable or non-biodegradable wastes.
Waste Management. is the collection, disposal, managing and monitoring of waste
materials.
Ormoc City Plaza. is one of the most visited place in Ormoc City.
The next chapter will provide a more extensive background on these terms and about the
problem.
CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
According to Busalla, Cones, Mercader, Morales Serrano (2013) on their study on The
Level of Waste Management in the Selected Public School in Cebu City: Proposed improvement,
education is an essential part of our existence which is why approximately 23 million of the
Philippines’ population today is enrolled in elementary and secondary education. Of the 23
million, around 20 million are students of the public schools while the rest, about 3 million, are
enrolled in private school. With the recent implementation last June 4, 2012 of the K-12
educational system, this number will increase exponentially in the years to come.
Due to the expected rise in numbers of enrollees because of the new educational system,
environment health is the one of the main concerns of the school and the government because it
directly affects the students as well as the surrounding communities. Almost the quarter of the
population is the elementary and the secondary students and as a group, they have an enormous
impact in the environment. This impact is geared towards a positive one. The capacity of these
students to influence is used appropriately so as to raise awareness and to compel the rest of the
population to do the responsible act of proper waste disposal.
Prohibited Acts
According to the brochure of SCC Health and Environmental Committee the following
are the Prohibited Acts 1) littering, throwing, dumping of waste in the campus and vicinity, 2)
pasting on walls using double-sided, adhesives and packaging tapes, 3) used of non-
environmentally acceptable (styrofoam) and excessive food packaging, 4) bringing cold/ice
water in cellophane in the campus, 5) junk-food vending (high in sugar/high in salt) in the
campus, 6) used of plastics or cellophane as bunting, 7) used of non-environmentally acceptable
materials on school activities, non-segregation of wastes in offices and buildings 9) open burning
of solid waste.
The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act
Republic Act. No. 9003or the “Ecological Solid Waste Management Act” provides the
legal framework for the country’s systematic, comprehensive and ecological solid waste
management program that shall ensure protection of public health and the environment. It
underscores, among other things, the need to create the necessary institutional mechanism and, as
well as imposes penalties for acts in violation of any of its provisions. (The National Solid Waste
Management Commission Secretariat; Environment Management Bureau-DENR, 2012).
As stipulated in Republic Act 9003, section 2, the policy of the state ensures the
protection of the public health and environment; set guidelines and targets for solid waste
avoidance and volume reduction through source reduction and waste minimization measures,
including composting, recycling, re-use, recovery and green charcoal process among others.
There must be appropriate and environmentally sound solid waste management facilities in
accordance with the ecologically sustainable development principles. It ensure proper
segregation, collection, transport, storage, treatment and disposal of solid wastes through the
formulation and adoption of the best environmental.

CHAPTER V
SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Summary
The study aimed to seek answers to the following questions:
1. How the ormocanons manage their waste within the Ormoc City Plaza?
2. Is segregation of waste in the Ormoc City plaza important?
It is delimited in knowing how the ormocanos within the Ormoc City Plaza manages their
wastes. The researchers used Descriptive Design.
Thus, they also used Direct method of gathering data through survey. The respondents of
the study were the people who visits the plaza and also the vendors, the survey took 2 days and
each respondent consumed 3 to 6 minutes on answering the questionnaire.
Conclusions
The researcher conclude that they are successful in doing the study because they were
able to meet the objectives set of the study.
The researcher found out that the Ormoc City Plaza can be able to maintain the
cleanliness, even though many people regularly visit the plaza. Based on our results, all the
respondents have a self-discipline towards to the cleanliness of their area, they can maintain their
waste properly by putting in the trash bins others prefer to put their waste in bag or pocket.
Especially they convey to the other people of the importance of cleanliness in the Ormoc City
Plaza
According to the data gathered by the researchers, most of the respondents’ reasons of
maintaining their waste are: Avoiding littering, they pick a piece of trash, avoiding throwing
garbage anywhere/keep in pocket or bag, segregate, responsible, disposing of garbage properly.
These reasons are the presented remarks of the respondents. These just prove that there are
various reasons on how they can maintain their waste materials.
The researchers concluded that the people who regularly visit the plaza have a care to the
environment especially the Ormoc City Government that values the cleanliness of the Ormoc
City Plaza.
Recommendations
Based on the conclusion, the following recommendations were made:
1. The City Government of Ormoc should take any and all necessary steps to educate the
public on segregating waste.
2. The community should adopt a self-help approach to solve the problem and make sure
that they themselves adhere to proper waste disposal practices.
3. People should develop proper attitudes and perception towards waste handling, which
should be achieved through both formal and informal education.
4. Make proper waste management a policy or regulation to be followed within the Ormoc
City Plaza.
