Experiment - 2
Aim: To study the chopper-based speed control of dc drives.
Apparatus Required:
. MATLAB Simulink version 2018a
1
2. DC Machine (10HP; 240V; 1750RPM; Field:300V)
Theory:
● A chopper is a static power electronic device that
converts fixed dc input voltage to a variable dc output
voltage. It can be step up or step down. It is also
considered as a dc equivalent of an ac transformer
since they behave in an identical manner.
● Chopper systems offer smooth control, high efficiency,
faster response and regeneration facility. The power
semiconductor devices used for a chopper circuit can be
force commutated with thyristor, BJT, MOSFET, IGBT and
GTO. Among the above switches, IGBT and GTO are
widely used.
● One of the popular methods of speed control of DC
motors is using a chopper. Chopper is a device that
gives variable DC output from applied fixed DC input. It
simply chops fixed DC and generates v
ariable DC.

Observation Table:
Electrical
Duty Input Load Armature Speed Torque
Cycle (Nm)
Voltage Torque Current (rad/s)
(%)
(volts) (Nm) (A)
50 240 1 2.26 109.4 2.45
60 240 1 2.34 130.3 2.53
MATLAB Plots:
Plot 1-For 50% Duty Cycle
Mean Speed = 109.4 rad/sec
Plot 2-For 60% Duty Cycle
Mean Speed = 130.3 rad/sec
Conclusion:
As duty ratio increases the mean speed increases.
