(Tip: Simulation Duration (Time Duration) : (1/message Frequency) Required Periods)

This document describes an experiment on double sideband suppressed carrier (DSBSC) modulation. The experiment involves generating a DSBSC signal using a single tone message signal and reconstructing the original message from the modulated signal. Key steps include deriving the mathematical model of DSBSC modulation, calculating signal frequencies, measuring signal power, and observing the output of a low-pass filter.

Experiment 1: DSBSC Modulation - Lab Preliminary Report

Part A - Generating a DSBSC signal & Reconstructing the message signal (using a single
tone sinusoid)

Mathematical model that defines the DSBSC signal:

DSBSC signal = the message × the carrier.
Mathematical model that defines the DSBSC demodulation:
DSBSC demodulator’s output = DSBSC signal × the carrier

When the equation is solved, we get four sinewaves with the following frequencies:

• Carrier + (carrier + message)

• Carrier + (carrier - message)
• Carrier - (carrier + message) which simplifies to just the message
• Carrier - (carrier - message) which also simplifies to just the message

Two of the products are non-message sinewaves. These sinewaves are unwanted and so
a low-pass filter is used to reject them while keeping the message.

Construct below blocks. Use 𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝑤𝑚 𝑡) and 𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝑤𝑐 𝑡) for m(t) and c(t), respectively.

Arrange time duration in order to see 3 periods of the information signal.

Use sine wave, product, scope modules. You may check the first laboratory class for detailed
information about mentioned modules.
Question 1) What feature of the modulated signal suggests that it’s a DSBSC signal? Add the
screenshots of the output’s scopes. Does the modulated signal resemble the information signal
or the carrier signal? Please comment.
Question 2) How many sinewaves does the DSBSC signal consist of, and what are their
frequencies? Take Fourier transform of these signal analytically and draw the modulated
signal spectrum. Also, add output of the spectrum scope of DSB signal (SIMULINK).
Question 3) Calculate power of DSBSC signal and efficiency of DSBSC signal.
Question 4) Add a screenshot of the LPF output and explain what you see. Change filter order
and observe its effect.
Hint: The cut off frequency (passband edge frequency (rad/s)) should be larger than the max.
frequency of m(t).
Part B - Generating a DSBSC signal using sum of two sinusoids as message signal
Message: (2Vp-p 50 Hz + 2Vp-p 150Hz)
Carrier: 4Vp-p 2 KHz sine

Question 5) How many sinewaves does the DSBSC signal consist of, and what are their
frequencies? Take Fourier transform of these signal analytically and draw the modulated
signal spectrum. Also, add output of the spectrum scope of DSB signal (SIMULINK).

Question 5) Add a screenshot of the LPF output and explain what you see.
