PART B (5 x 13 = 65 Marks)
11. a. A bolt is subjected to a tensile load of 25kN and to a shear load of10kN.Determine the
diameter of the bolt according to maximum principal and maximum shear stress theories.
Take factor of safety as 2.5, yield stress in tension =300MPa and Poisson ratio =0.25
(OR)
b. The bending stress in a machine part fluctuates between a tensile stress of 280N/mm2 and
a compressive stress of 140N/mm2.What should be the minimum ultimate strength to carry
this fluctuation indefinitely according to Goodman’s formula and Soderberg’s formula.
Take factor of safety=1.75; Assume the yield point is likely to be more than 55% of the
ultimate tensile strength and less than 93% of it.
12. a. Design a shaft to transmit 2kW at 150rpm from an electric motor to a lathe head stock
through a pulley using a flat belt drive. The pulley is located at 140mm from the center of
the bearing. Diameter of the pulley is 200 mm. The pulley weighs 250N.Angle of lap of the
belt is 180° and the co efficient of friction between belt and pulley is 0.3. Shock factor in
1/3
bending is 1.5 and in twisting is 1.Take allowable shear stress of the shaft material
as44N/mm2.
(OR)
b. A mild shaft has to transmit 80kW at 200rpm.The allowable shear stress in the shaft is
limited to 45N/mm2.Allowble shear stress for key material is 45 N/mm2, crushing stress for
bolt and key is 160 N/mm2. Shear stress for bolt material = 30 N/mm2; shear stress for cast
iron = 8 N/mm2. Design a cast iron flange coupling of protected type.
13. a. Design a knuckle joint to transmit 150kN. The design stresses may be taken as 75 MPa in
tension, 60 MPa in shear and 150 MPa in compression.
(OR)
b. A single riveted lap joint is to be made of 10 mm plates. Find the diameter of the rivets,
their pitch and efficiency of the joint [ϭt] = 80 N/mm2; [Ʈ] =64 N/mm2. And so design the
joint, such that its strength to withstand shear of rivets equal its strength to withstand tearing
of the plate across the line of rivet holes.
14. a. A helical compression spring of music wire carries a fluctuating load C=8, n=3, d=10
mm, average load on the spring =800N. Find the permissible values of maximum and
minimum loads. Take ϭu = 1900 N/mm2.
(OR)
b. Design a cantilever spring to absorb 620N-m energy without exceeding a deflection of
150mm and the permissible stress is 875MPa.The length of the spring is 600 mm. Take
modulus of elasticity as 210GPa.
15. a. Select a suitable ball bearing for an axial flow compressor to carry a radial load of 250Kg
and a thrust of 150Kg.The bearing will be in use for 40hours per week for 5 years. The
speed of the shaft is 1000rpm.The diameter of the shaft is 50mm.
(OR)
b. Design a journal bearing for a centrifugal pump from the following data. Load on the
journal=2000N; Speed of the journal=900 rpm; type of oil is SAE10, for which absolute
viscosity at 55° C=0.017kg/m-s; Ambient temperature of oil is 15.5°; Maximum bearing
pressure for the pump=1.5N/mm2
PART C (1x15=15 Marks)
16. a. The connecting rod of a petrol engine is to be designed for the following data. Piston
diameter 80mm; Stroke 120mm; weight of the reciprocating parts 15N; length of connecting
rod 240mm; Max speed 2800 rpm; explosion pressure corresponding to 10° of crank angle
is 3Mpa; factor of safety 6. If the connecting rod is to be made of 40 Cr Steel, find the
dimensions of the I-section connecting rod.

(OR)
b. Determine the cross section of the C-frame section shown in the figure to withstand a
maximum load of 50kN.Permissible stress in tension is 125N/mm2. Find also the stresses at
X-X. Assume h=2b.
