DESIGN OF MACHINE MEMBERS– II
(Mechanical Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 70
Note: 1. Question Paper consists of two parts (Part-A and Part-B)
2. Answer ALL the question in Part-A
3. Answer any FOUR Questions from Part-B
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PART –A (14 Marks)
1. a) What are the differences between hydrostatic and hydrodynamic lubrication? [2M]
b) Explain briefly about whipping stress in connecting rod. [2M]
c) Write expressions for h2 to the rectangular and circular sections. [2M]
d) What do you mean by Simple and Duplex roller chains? [3M]
e) Explain briefly about the design of nut in the power screws. [3M]
f) How do you designate the Wire ropes? [2M]
PART –B (56 Marks)
2. a) Following data is given for a 3600 hydrodynamic bearing: [7M]
Journal diameter= 100 mm
Bearing length = 100 mm
Radial load = 50Kn
Journal speed = 1440 rpm
Radial clearance = 0.12 mm
Viscosity of lubricant =16 Cp
Calculate : (i) Minimum film thickness and (ii) Coefficient of friction and
(iii)Power lost in friction.
b) A single row deep groove ball bearing No.6002 is subjected to an axial thrust [7M]
of 1000 N and a radial load of 2200 N.Find the expected life that 50 % of the
bearings will complete under this condition.
3. a) Why 'I' section is choosing for high speed I.C engines? [4M]
b) Design a connecting rod for four stroke petrol engine with the following data: [10M]
Piston diameter=0.1m, stroke=0.14 m, length of connecting rod, center to
center =0.315m, weight of reciprocating pumps= 18.2N, speed=1500 rpm with
possible over speed of 2500 rpm, compression ratio = 4:1, probable maximum
explosion pressure=2.45MPa
4. a) Explain the design procedure for determine the resultant stresses in a crane [4M]
hook
b) A central horizontal section of a hook is a trapezium with inner width =80mm, [10M]
outer width =50mm, and depth=150mm, the center of curvature of the section
is at a distance of 120 mm from the inner fiber and the load line is 100mm
from the inner fiber. What maximum load, the hook will carry If maximum
stress is not to exceed 120MN/m2?
5. a) What are the advantages of Chain drives? [4M]
b) Select a suitable V-belt drive to connect a 20 kW, 1440 rpm motor to a [10M]
compressor running at 480 rpm for 15 hr per day. The space available for
centre distance of approximately 1200 mm. Design: (i) the specifications of the
belt (ii) diameters of motor and compressor pulleys (iii) the correct centre
distance and (iv) the number of belts
6. a) Explain briefly about force analysis in helical gears. [4M]
b) A pair of spur gears with 200 full depth involute teeth consists of a 20 teeth [10M]
pinion meshing with a 41 teeth gear. The module is 3 mm while the face width
is 40 mm. The material for the pinion as well as for the gear is steel with an
ultimate tensile strength of 600 N/mm2.The gears are heat –treated to a surface
hardness 0f 400 BHN. The pinion rotates at 1450 rpm and the service factor for
the application is 1.75.Assume that velocity factor accounts for the dynamic
load and the factor of safety is 1.5.Design the rated power that the gears can
transmit.
7. a) Write the design procedure for the foot lever and the cranked levers [10M]
b) Explain briefly about rope sheaves and drums in wire ropes. [4M]
