DEGREE OF COMPARISON

Defenition Degree of Comparison


Degree of comparison is an adjective that changes shape and is
used to compare one thing or several people with another. Most of the
degrees of comparison in these adjectives have a lot to do with descriptive
adjectives and adjectives of quantity.
Degrees of comparison (level of comparison) is used to indicate the
degree of comparison of adjectives that characterize nouns.
Types of Degrees of Comparison
In adjectives, there are 3 (three) types of degrees of comparison, namely:
 Positive Degree
 Comparative Degree
 Superlative Degree

Irregular Comparison
1. Positive Degree
Positive Degree (ordinary level) is an adjective used to express a level
that is ordinary or simple.

Use of Positive Degree


The use of Positive Degree (usual level) is as follows:
A. To state a situation as it is.
Example sentence: Sofia is a dilligent girl

Comparing two objects or people of the same level, be it nature,


form or other parts.
Example sentence: David is as tall as my brother

Expresses two objects or people who do not have the same level of
comparison.
Example sentence: His ruler is not as long as yours.

 She is as beautiful as her mother.
 My sister is no less smart than your sister.
 This pen is not as black as that.
 Those cars are less expensive than these cars.
2. Comparative Degree
Comparative Degree is an adjective used to express an object or person
has a level that is more than the comparison.

Use of Comparative Degree


The use of the Comparative Degree is as follows:
1. To further emphasize the form of Comparative Degree .
Example sentence: His motorcycle is far better than yours
2. Expresses two objects or people who do not have the same level of
comparison.
Example sentence: His ruler is not as long as yours.
3. The use of this Comparative Degree (more level) can be used in
increasingly more circumstances.
Example sentences: The harder you study English, the cleverer you will
be.
Comparative Degree form (more level) without THAN.
Example sentence: Jeffrey is the taller of the two boys

3. Superlative Degree
Superlative Degree is an adjective that is used to express the most/ter
level of all comparisons.

 Donna is the cleverest student in the class.
 Jennifer is the most beautiful giri in the university.

 One of the biggest mall in this city is the Gardenia Mall.

Examples:
as black as coal = black as charcoal (very black).

This word is usually used to describe something dirty, for example:


hands, clothes, and so on.
 as busy as bee = busy like a bee. (very busy)

This word is usually used to describe the state or nature of a person.

4. Comparative and superlative of irregular adjectives


A part from the -er/-est and more/most forms, there is one more
form that you need to know. These forms are irregular adjectives.
In this form, the adjectives will change according to the type of
sentence. The following is a list of irregular adjectives quoted from
Grammarly:

 Good/well -> better -> best


 Far -> farther further -> the farthest the furthes
 Bad/badly -> worse -> worst
 Little -> less -> Least

Usage for words with more than one syllable:


-Yogyakarta is the best city to study, I guess
- I got the worst score among the students in my class.
