CHAPTER 3
This chapter describes the research design, setting, sample and sampling design, data
collection procedure, instrument used and how survey data was measured that is relevant to the
research. The research used is a quantitative research method in determining the “Influence of
Study Habits and Coping Mechanisms to Course Enhancement Performance of Nursing
Students” who took Course Enhancement Program 1 to 3 at National University.
Research Design
A descriptive correlational - research design will be used in the study “The Influence of
Study Habits and Coping Mechanisms to Course Enhancement Performance of Nursing Students
at National University – Manila, A.Y 2021 – 2022.” Descriptive correlational studies describe
the variables and the relationships that occur naturally between and among them (Sousa, 2007).
For this study, the researchers will look into the influence between study habits and coping
mechanism to the course enhancement program of the nursing students and utilizing a
quantitative type of research.
In this study, the dependent variable is “course enhancement performance of the 4th year
BSN students” will be described. No manipulation or control of the variable will be done.
Instead, performance of the undergraduate BSN students will be assessed through close ended
questions to gain insight on all the opinions on a certain topic. A focused group discussion will
be conducted to gather the necessary data as this will be efficient and the most ethical method for
the researchers. This helps us better understand and explore research subjects' opinions,
behavior, and experience.
Research Locale
The study “The Influence of Study Habits and Coping Mechanisms to Course
Enhancement Performance of Nursing Students at National University – Manila, A.Y 2021 –
2022.” Will be conducted at National University – College of Allied Health via online mode
utilizing MS Teams through Google Forms. The respondents of the study are the 4th year BSN
students consisting of
2 sections; NUR181 and NUR182 who are taking Course Enhancement Program. A total
population of 51 students are currently taking the course urse subject: NUR181 = 32 and
NUR182
= 19. Given this, the researchers will utilize 10 students from NUR – 181 for pilot testing.
Sampling Scheme
The respondents will be selected from the population of 4th year of BSN with the
following criteria:
Inclusion Criteria
1. Must be a 4th year BSN student of National University.
2. Must have finished all the nursing programs given from 1st year up to the
present.
3. Took the course enhancement program.
4. Had consented for the study.
Exclusion Criteria
1. Study involved participants who were not BSN.
2. BSN students who drop the nursing program course subjects (e.g., Anaphy,
Fundamental of Nursing, Pharmacology)
3. Transfer students from other universities.
4. Those who are not 4th year BSN students of National University
5. Those who took the pilot testing.
6. Those who did not completely answer the survey.
7. Those who did not consented for the study.
Sampling Design
A non-probability purposive sampling is utilized to collect data from 51 students of 4 th
Year of BSN at National University. With this, the researchers will collect data from people or
other relevant elements that they can access conveniently. There is no pattern in acquiring these
respondents as it involves the sample being drawn from that part of the population that is close to
hand.
Sample size
The target population is consisting of all 4th year undergraduates BSN students at
National University who are currently taking course enhancement program. According to
College of Allied Health, there are two (2) sections consisting in 4 th Year of BSN at National
University. The population are divided into two (2) categories; NUR181 and NUR182 whereas
NUR181 (n=32) while NUR182 (n=19). Two (2) sections are consisted of total population of 51
students.

Data Gathering Procedure
A letter-request seeking permission to conduct the study will be solicited from the dean
of the nursing department with the concern of the school administrator. The purpose of the letter
is to ask permission to conduct the study and allow the student to participate in the study.
After all the necessary formalities, the survey questionnaires will be administered to the
4th Year BSN Students of National University, A.Y. 2021-2022. The data gathered will be
collated, organized, and will be reflected in the succeeding chapter.

Figure 4. Research Flow Chart
The flowchart above explains that the procedures are set as a guide for the researchers to
complete the data collection. Data gathering procedure will start after the approval of the study.
As the study is approved, researchers will be requesting for the population of BSN Batch 2022 of
National University. As the researchers have obtained the population of the BSN batch 2022 of
National University, population will be utilized in the development of questionnaires. As the
questionnaires are created, it will be set for approval. As the questionnaires are approved,
division and selection of participants and consent signing will be done after the completion of
course enhancement program 1 to 3. After that, the survey questionnaire will disseminate to
all the
participants with the use of created questionnaires developed by the researchers. For the
collection of interview data such as written answers will be compiled and subjected for
analyzation and interpretation.
Instrumentation
The research study will use survey schedules in gathering data. With the instruments that
will be used, the researchers will be able to see the respondents’ performance towards the Course
Enhancement Program and its implementation at National University. Wording of questions is
very critical and should take into consideration; appropriateness of the content, level of
sophistication of language, type and form, sequence and how is data sought from the
respondents. Pilot testing of the questionnaires will be conducted at University of Makati.
The 4th year BSN students at National University will be given survey questionnaires to
validate the areas of concern in the study and will be followed by a random focus group
discussion conducted in bias free online via google forms using the survey guide wherein
respondents will rate the scale from the researchers enlist scenario. During the conduction of the
survey, respondents will be asked a series of close ended questions in a semi-structured format
from the survey form. Unnecessary clarifications will likewise be avoided.
