TOPIC: ADJECTIVES

Learning Objective:
In this lesson we will learn about adjectives and its
types, by using them in different sentences and oral
structures during in class and out of class activities.
Adjectives: Describes a noun.
They tell us more about a noun
nouns.
Adjectives usually go before the noun
nouns.
Example: I have an interesting English book
GEETING STARTED! Find the adjectives.
1. The new teacher handed out the white papers.
2. The laptop computer has a blue screen and a black screen.
3. The big yellow bus went down the wrong road
4. The crazy plane will crash quickly.
5. That big bad dog frequently chased the scared little boys up trees.
6. The young boy is very, very fat.
7. The two doctors visited the sick patient at the community hospital.
8. The football team won the big game easily!
9. The little brown cat sometimes has bad hair
An adjective is a word that tells us more about a noun. It "describes" or
"modifies" a noun (The big dog was hungry).
•a green car
•a dark sky
•an interesting story
Sometimes an adjective comes AFTER a verb:
•My car is green.
•The sky became dark.
•His story seemed interesting.
An adjectives can also modify pronouns (She is beautiful).
Look at these examples:
•They were sad.
•I thought it seemed strange.
•Those are not expensive.
Note that we can often use two or more adjectives together
(a beautiful young French lady / it is black and white tv)
6 Types
1. Adjectives of Quality
of
These adjectives are used to describe the nature of a
Adjectives noun. They give an idea about the characteristics of
the noun
Examples:
❖ honest, kind, large, bulky, beautiful, ugly etc.
❖ Santa Ana is a large city with many historical monuments.
❖ Sheila is a beautiful woman.

2. Adjectives of Quantity
These adjectives help to show the amount or the approximate amount of
the noun or pronoun.
Examples:
❖ all, half, many, few, little, no, enough, great etc.
❖ They have finished most of the rice.
❖ Many people came to visit the fair.
❖ One, two, three
❖ First, second, third…
3. Demonstrative Adjectives
These adjectives are used to point out or indicate a particular noun or
pronoun using the adjectives - This, That, These and Those.
Examples:
❖ That bag belongs to Neil.
❖ Try using this paintbrush in art class.
❖ I really like those shoes.
❖ These flowers are lovely.
4. Interrogative Adjectives
These adjectives are used to ask questions about nouns or in relation to
nouns, they are - Where, What, Which and Whose.
Examples:
❖ Where did he say he was going?
❖ What assignment did I miss out on?
❖ Which is your favorite author?
❖ Whose pen is this?
5. Possessive adjective
They show possession
My, your, his, her, its, our, their
Examples:
❖ My book is interesting
❖ Your name is pretty
❖ Her coat is cute
❖ His fathers is a loway
❖ Our class is hard
❖ Their car broke down
6. Proper adjective
They take a proper noun and use it as an adjective
Examples:
• Christian music makes you feel so good.
• The American embassy was closed.
• The African drums sounded loud in the concert hall.
