MASKING
DEFINITION
A procedure of wearing a surgical mask or medical mask, a personal protective equipment worn by health
professionals during medical procedures. It is primarily used by OR staff that have two ties that secure the mask to the
face instead of loops.

PURPOSE
- To protect the wearer against splashes or splatters of blood or body fluid.
- To prevent transmission of pathogens from the respiratory tract of the client and from the wearer.
- To help block large-particle droplets or sprays that may contain germs (viruses and bacteria) to reach the mouth and
nose.

EQUIPMENT
 Mask

Considerations before the procedure:


Perform hand washing.
Ensure to keep a container of clean masks near the handwashing facility.

Things to follow up after the procedure:


Drop the soiled mask into a proper receptacle or container. Perform hand hygiene. Safely discard
the mask at once if it is disposable.

Things that need to be documented:


Proper masking was performed. Followed measures to maintain safety.

Things to remember to maintain safety:


Ensure a proper applied mask that fits snuggly over the mouth and nose. Touch only
the mask by strings. Do not handle it excessively.
Never lower the mask to hang loosely around the neck.
