At this juncture, from the recent activities we had, what was those activities all about? Yes?

Now, How many of you are already went to a tailoring shop? Please raise your hand? Oh, mostly are
already went to a tailoring shop.

Are you familiar with the various processes in clothing construction? Okay. Processes such as? Sewing,
of course.

Since all og you here are already familiar on clothing constructions, Let’s now start sewing our lesson for
today and that is the History of Clothing Construction.

Clothes really weren’t a fashion all the time. In fact, there was a time when people having no clothes at
all. So, we don’t really know when that was and when that went out of fashion We don’t know exactly
when humans being started wearing clothes. But once they invented clothing, there’s been no looking
back.

Early humans originated from Africa where the weather was mostly pleasant and you could actually
survive with no clothes. We humans have always been an adventurous being and then what our ancient
ancestors did was venturing out Africa into Europe, Siberia up to north. In this place, it was really got
cold especially during winter. So, what scientists suggests is that humans invented clothing to save
themselves from the bitter cold. Which actually makes some sense. Only man used his intelligence to
build tools and weapons out of materials like stones and woods. They use these weapons to hunt down
hairy animals or animals who have thick fur and then they used the skin of these animals to make
primitive clothes and wrap themselves and kept them warm. This was the discovery that led to the
world of clothing.

So, instead of just wrapping the animal skin around them they started to make holes in it to put their
heads and arms through. Soon, the methods got more and more complicated, they figured out how to
make this pointy sharp tool such as these needles made from animal bones, that they use to punch
holes in the animal’s skin and sew them out. Now they could make something much better than just
simple loose hanging clothes in order for them to make their arms, legs and feet could be also covered
and they could somehow look fashionable as well.

So, one of the oldest clothing materials that we do have evidence of is found in this special place called,
Catal Huyuk in Turkey. It is believed to be the oldest human settlement that is still present even up to
this day. After studying the site, scientist have confirmed that they grew these plants called flax to
produce sort of fibrous material that they use to make cloth.

This cloth material Is what we commonly known as Linen. This is the oldest evidence we have of human
beings making clothes from threads.

Actually, this has a legend. A long time ago, around the year 2696 BC. A Chinese empress named Leizu
was having tea under a mulberry tree in the imperial gardens. A few moments after, a cocoon fell into
her tea and she kept watching it and after a while, the thing unraveled into a long thin thread. So the
empress ordered her royal physicians to find out what that was. After much research, they found out
that the cocoon was actually made from a long thread that was both strong and soft. And that was the
story on how silk clothes were invented.

Then, the ancient Chinese stepped ahead and figured out how to make the clothes in different colors.
They used some color extracted from plants and apply it to the clothes. And that was the start of the
interventions of the concept of Dyeing. They traded dye pigment to the world that results of the clothes
to become colorful rather than being bland and boring. In the 13 th century, there was a boom in dyeing
industry and suddenly there was color everywhere.

Now, let’s go to the 1700s CE, during the birth of the Industrial Age, the process of textile making was
accelerated by improved looms and spinners and larger quantities of cloth could be produced for the
designing of clothing. Eventually, machines began to take the place of people in this process.

And by this time people had enough knowledge of materials, fabrics, colors and they started
experiments. That is the reason of the birth the art of Fashion. People started coming up with all sorts of
designs for clothes and fashion started picking up all over the world as people start experimenting and
incorporate different aspects in clothing construction. Now in the 21 st century we already have these
clothes that was the result of the prehistoric discovery of clothes.

Now, let’s have another activity. This activity is entitled DESIGN ME!

On this activity I have here a printed work sheet. On this paper you can see a picture of a traditional
Chinese silk dress. What you’re going to do is, you will be going to apply your creativity to come up with
a design for the dress and assume that you would use your coloring materials as dye as how the ancient
Chinese color their dress. Understood? Okay, Great. You may now go start with your activity. I will only
give you 5 minutes to do that, Got it? Okay, go.

Are you all done? If you are done, Please pass your worksheet to the front. Are all of the worksheets
already here? Alright very good.

At this juncture, in order to evaluate your learnings for today’s class. You will going to have a post
assessnment. A short quiz with 5 multiple choice questions. Please get ¼ sheet of paper. Okay you may
start answering.
Okay time is up. I’m sure you are all done answering. Exchange your paper with your seatmate. Let’s us
check your answers if it is correct. Okay let’s start)

Alright, ocunt the number of checks and return it to your seatmate.

Who among you here got perfect the perfect score? Excellent, almost all of you got 5 points.

How about 4? Alright very good

3? None. 2? None 1?None

Let us all give ourselves a round of applause.

Now for your assignement: On 1 whole sheet of paper, write your reflections about the topic we have
tackled today. Describe the current processes in clothing construction and tell how it differs from the
one during in pre-historic era. Am I clear enough? Okay very good.

Pack your things and pick up the pieces of paper under your chair. Let us all stand up for a short prayer.
In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen. (prayer)
