TURNING
HOBBIES
INTO CASH
1.7 They go to school, get good grades, and hang out with their friends.
In most ways, they are typical teenagers. But what makes these teens
different from their peers is that they have learned how to make money
from their hobbies.
5
Ryan Wilson, 15, learned to bake by watching online tutorials. He enjoys
baking cupcakes and bread, but what he really loves creating are large,
colorful cakes. He usually bakes one cake every weekend. Each cake takes
about eight hours to make, and that doesn’t include the time needed to
10 upload videos to his social media pages—some of which receive more than
200,000 views. After uploading the video, he shares the cake with friends and
family. Ryan has appeared on several TV baking shows, and someday hopes
to have his own show. The self-taught baker also makes money—money that
will one day be used for college. And that’s the real icing on the cake!
15
Jasmine Shao was 13 years old when she asked her mother for permission to
post her videos online—videos featuring calligraphy, goal planning, and
study tips. At first her mother wasn’t sure it was a good idea, but, after seeing
how hard her daughter worked to create the videos, she eventually agreed.
20 Now 17, Jasmine is a social media influencer—someone who others follow,
get ideas from, and even copy. Many people have viewed her videos: In 2019,
she had over 270,000 Instagram followers, and 460,000 YouTube subscribers.
Her success has even led to a book on study tips. “It’s weird to think that I’m
able to affect people across the country and even the world,” she says.
25
Luke Tesarek, 19, earned some serious cash in high school. It all started at
age 13 when he first began playing video games. He quickly learned how to
program games from an online tutorial and, at age 15, began to earn money
as an online game programmer. He earned $8,000 that summer. Luke then
30 started work at a company as their team leader: The average age of his team
was 17! At first, his mother was not happy. “I used to yell at Luke to get off the
computer,” she said. That began to change when she asked him how many
online viewers he had. She thought he said 2,000. It was actually two million.
