Form 4 Home Work and Examples

1. The document provides instructions on how to expand and simplify algebraic expressions involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of algebraic fractions. The key steps are to find the least common multiple of denominators and then combine like terms in the numerators. 2. Examples are given of expanding and simplifying expressions such as (a+b)(c-d), performing operations on algebraic fractions, and evaluating expressions for given values of variables. 3. Order of operations (BODMAS) and replacing variables with values are also discussed. Worked examples demonstrate simplifying expressions and evaluating them for given values step-by-step using the order of operations.

Addition and subtraction of algebraic fractions

Adding and subtracting algebraic fractions is no different from adding and
subtracting fractions in arithmetic.
We must: (1) find the L.C.M. of the denominators;
(2) write each fraction with this common denominator;
(3) add and/or subtract the numerators.
Remember that the L.C.M. is the product of the highest powers of each factor.
