ACTIVITY 1 INTRODUCTION TO SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY

Test I. DIRECTION: ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS BRIEFLY.
1. What is science, Technology and society?

SCIENCE- The word " science" probably brings to mind many different picture: a fat textbook, white lab coats and microscopes, astronomer peering through a telescope, a
naturalist in the rainforest, Einstein's equations scribbled on a chalkboard, the launch of the space shuttle, bubbling beaker. All of those images reflect some aspect of science,
but none of them provides a full picture because science has so many facets:Science is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable
explanations and predictions about the universe.
- Science is both a body of knowledge and a process. In school, science may sometimes seem like a collection of isolated and static facts listed in a textbook, but that's only a
small part of the story. Just as importantly, science is also a process of discovery that allows us to link isolated facts into coherent and comprehensive understandings of the
natural world.

TECHNOLOGY- Technology is the sum of any techniques, skills, methods, and processes used in the production of goods or services or in the accomplishment of objectives,
such as scientific investigation.

SOCIETY- A society is a group of individuals involved in persistent social interaction, or a large social group sharing the same spatial or social territory, typically subject to the
same political authority and dominant cultural expectations
.
2. How science and technology affect to our society?
- By making life easier, science has given man the chance to pursue societal concerns such as ethics, aesthetics, education, and justice; to create cultures; and to improve
human conditions. But it has also placed us in the unique position of being able to destroy ourselves. From personalized computers in our pockets to self-driving cars, the world
is at our fingertips today thanks to technology. Technology has advanced into many areas of our lives, making information more accessible, improving communication, changing
transportation, and the list goes on.

3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of Science and Technology?

ADVANTAGES- By discovering science, scientists are able to create something that can immeasurably improve the quality of life; for example, computers, telephones,
televisions, planes and the list go on. With the discovery of these inventions, people can achieve their aspirations much more easily. As we know, science has helped our
country a lot. It can turn a small, poor country into a progressive country. Science is the only hope of man against diseases. Without the inventions of science and the ceaseless
efforts of scientists, many diseases such as malaria , cancer etc. were considered incurable diseases and diseases in the past would be defeated. The technology is so popular
and economically profitable that benefits are published regularly. These include his ability to improve education and communication. Technology is the practical science. With
the use of technology, you can make your daily work easier.

DISADVANTAGES- If on the one hand, science and technology have brought us a lot of wonders, on the other hand, there are also disadvantages of science and technology.
First, he has increased anxiety in our lives. Second, when technology falls into the wrong hands, it can have a negative impact on society, such as the rising rate of cyber
criminality , hacking, theft of personal information and pornography websites. Third, technology has also increased alternatives and opportunities for terrorists. In addition,
technology has removed our physical efforts and we are getting more luxurious and comfortable living. Economies lagging behind in the integration of new technologies are
seen as poor economies and their progress in the world is hampered. Science has been responsible for pollution and given us the nuclear bomb that threatens our very
existence. But in this also the fault lies not in science, but rather in the intention of man to abuse the discoveries of science.

4. Cite at least one notable development of Science and Technology and its significance to Society.
- The Essence of how science and technology contributes to society is the creation of new knowledge, and then utilization of that knowledge to boost the prosperity of human
lives, and to solve the various issues facing society.

Test II. Give the advantages and disadvantages of the following situation.
1. Use of Social Media
a. Advantage- One of the most important advantages of social media is connectivity. It can connect innumerable users from any place at any time. Through social media and
its connectivity, the information could be shared across the world, and building relationships with each other also became easy. It leads to worldwide connections.
b. Disadvantage- Lacks Emotional Connection
The quality of a conversation using social media is awful because you cannot sense the emotion or enthusiasm from the other person. It makes you wonder if they actually
mean what they say.

2. Conversion of agricultural land to industrial areas

a. Advantage- Those who don't have work can apply in building industrial areas.
b. Disadvantage- The land for agriculture has become lessened.

3. Use of robots/ machines in individual facilities

a. Advantage- Industrial robots can complete certain tasks faster and more efficiently than humans as they are designed and built to perform them with higher accuracy.
This combined with the fact they are used to automate processes which previously might have taken significantly more time and resource results in the use of industrial robots to
increase the efficiency of production lines.
b. Disadvantage- Implementing industrial robots can incur a fairly high capital cost however, they do prove highly effective and bring a positive ROI. This is why prior to
decisions being made we always recommend consideration is given to both the investment required and also the ROI you expect to achieve in implementing robots. Often the
advice we give is to take out asset finance and the ROI of the robot more than pays for the interest on the asset finance. However for 2019 the Government has increased the
Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) to encourage investment in machinery. This investment allowance means that businesses can deduct qualifying capital expenditure from its
taxable profits to spend on machinery, tools and other business equipment.

4. Emergence of the different brands and models of cars

a. Advantage- Cars are very useful for all kinds of commutes ranging from short distance commutes to long drive.
Cars are very comfortable to travel in.
Cars can be used in all kinds of weather ranging from rain to snow.
b. Disadvantage- Cars are costly to purchase and are not a viable option for lower- income households.
Cars are expensive to maintain and require frequent services.
Cars are a major source of environmental pollution.

5. Emergence of genetically modified organisms

a. Advantage- Some benefits of genetic engineering in agriculture are increased crop yields, reduced costs for food or drug production, reduced need for pesticides,
enhanced nutrient composition and food quality, resistance to pests and disease, greater food security, and medical benefits to the world's growing population.
b. Disadvantage- Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are a form of scientific farming where chemicals are pumped to crops to increase product sizes and yield.
Although this method is highly debated, it has become increasingly common in everyday foods. However, just like any other process, it also has two sides. Here are the
advantages and disadvantages of creating genetically modified crops.
Test III. Multiple Choice

enjoying STS countries

Test IV. Answer the following questions briefly.

1. Are science and technology part of your everyday life? Cite at least 2 examples and explain.
- In the present global situation, numerous powerful technologies have been developed to assist people in households and offices. Faster communication is made possible
through mobile phones and the Internet. New technology impacts our daily lives in every field, from cars, cell phones, computers and networks and power.

2. What are some of the notable human failures i9n the field of Science and Technology?
Fusion Energy - We’ve been promised fusion energy for a long time, but it has yet to materialize. For the last 50 years, fusion energy has always been “10 years away”.

Driverless Cars - Driverless cars has been something our culture has been preaching about since at least the 1950s. Despite 70 years of hope, driverless cars have yet to
arrive.

Physics - Our understanding of the universe is divided into two models. The first model is general relativity and the second is quantum physics. General relativity is applicable in
the macro world, while quantum is applicable in the micro. This represents a failure on the sciences part since we should have one model of the universe which unites these two
fields. This division has existed for 90 years.

3. If given the chance what technology would you like to invent and why?
-If you're given a chance to invent “. Why is this conditional? Does that assume that I don’t have a practical chance to invent what I will write as an answer? Then I can talk
about any pipe dream such as a time-travel machine or a real-time lie detector that would be extremely in demand in this election season. Indeed I’ve read posts about the
recent 9/12 DEM debate by apparently DEM voters that praised the candidates as much better than Trump while I see them as unelectable because nothing that they
mentioned is pragmatic nor good in my independent view. If I did invent something then it would be unwise for me to talk about it because a lot of money could be at stake.

4. What did you learn from this module that might be useful for your daily lives?
-What is more, technology can help develop many practical skills, including creating presentations, learning to differentiate reliable from unreliable sources on the Internet,
maintaining proper online etiquette, and writing emails.
