Tests: Same as for item 103, 104, and 105 or whichever is applicable

Item 103 – Structure Excavation

If excavated materials are wasted, the volume involved shall be reported, so that quality control
requirements may be adjusted accordingly. Submit Project Engineer Certificate of waste.

If excavated materials are incorporated into work:

Duties and responsibilities of a field


materialsman
1. To ascertain that all materials incorporated in the work pass the requirements of the DPWH
Standard and Specifications for Highways, Bridges and airports and to strictly comply with the
schedule of Minimum Testing Requirements.
2. To advice the Project Engineer on the acceptance or rejection of construction materials
intended for use in the project, based on test results.
3. Recommend the Project Engineer remedial measures for the correction of unsatisfactory
condition of materials.
4. To prepare design mixes for concrete and bituminous mixtures.
5. To conduct soil investigations and materials survey for probable sources of materials, and
reporting the approximate quantity available, suitability of materials and other pertinent data.
6. To ensure that samples are properly cured by standard procedures.
7. To see that samples sent to Regional/District Laboratory are well packed in durable containers
to avoid damages in transit, and that all samples are accompanied by a sample card filled-up
detail.
8. To fully acquaint himself with the standard procedures of sampling, testing and quality control
of materials.
9. To see that the Field Laboratory Building is constructed in accordance with the DPWH Standard
and Specification.
10. To see that field laboratory is adequately equipped to such that the progress of the work will not
be impeded to laboratory testing and that non-performance of tests should not be a cause of
delay in the prosecution of the work.
11. To see that all laboratory equipment are protected from dust or foreign matters that tend to
destroy their sensitivity.
12. To see that all weighing devices and testing machines are maintained and calibrated in
accordance with the DPWH Standard Specification.
13. To have at all times the complete and up-to-date materials map of the province or city, charts
and diagrams showing the progress of work, etc. in the laboratory building.
14. To keep a record or logbook of his daily activities ready for inspection anytime.
15. To comply strictly with all instruction and memorandum.
16. To submit within the required time frame test reports and other pertinent documents to the
Project Implementing Office (PIO).
17. To develop a system of filling pertinent reports on testing and quality control ready at anytime
for appraisal, inspection, or quality assurance audit.
