Scope and Meaning of Ethics


-Ethics is mainly known as the principle of moral conduct that makes a distinction
between good and bad/ evil, right and wrong, virtue and non-virtue. The word ethics is
derived from a Greek word ‘ethos’ meaning character. It is a branch of knowledge that
governs right and wrong conducts and behaviours of an individual, profession, group or
organization. It is a core of the professional and personal lives of people.
There are 3 different scopes of ethics. They are:
1. Meta-Ethics
2. Normative Ethics
3. Applied Ethics

B. Ethics and Moral the difference

- morals refer mainly to guiding principles, and ethics refer to specific rules


and actions, or behaviors.
C. Importance of Ethics

-Ethics are important not only in business but in academics and society as well
because it is an essential part of the foundation on which a civilized society is
built. Ethics is what guides us to tell the truth, keep our promises, or help
someone in need.
D. Relationship of ethics and other Science as to the following
          A. Ethics and logic
- logic provides a rational and critical approach in ethics, helping us understand the
nature of moral dilemmas.
          B. Ethics and Psychology
- correct ethics can be based only upon correct psychology. In this way, ethics and psychology are
intimately related. A complete psychological analysis of the ethical situation is essential for ethical
decision. - ethics presents man with the ideals; psychology suggests methods for making them
practical.

          C. Ethics and sociology


- The science of ethics is therefore practically a part of sociology. It deals with the
feelings and ideas underlying certain modes of conduct, while sociology deals with the
modes of conduct which spring from those feelings and ideas.
          D. Ethics and economics
- The relationship between ethics and economics in the modern age is typically viewed
as external. This view is usually articulated in the notion that for economic relations to
be ethical, an ethic must be imposed. Otherwise, economic relations are amoral.
          E. Ethics and Biology
- Bioethics is the study of the ethical issues emerging from advances in biology,
medicine and technologies. It proposes the discussion about moral discernment in society
and it is often related to medical policy and practice, but also to broader questions as
environment and well-being.
