Good morning, everyone! Especially to our professor, Dr. Romeo Sta. Maria Egot.

My name is Paula
Yaptangco, Teacher I from Potrero National High School, SDO Malabon and I will be reporting about the
definition of Ethics as well as its relation with other sciences.

Now, let’s start defining what Ethics is. Let’s watch this video first from the University of Texas at Austin.

The nature and morality of human behavior are studied in the philosophical subfield of ethics. What do
we mean by morality? It simply concerns the distinction or the difference between right and wrong or
good and bad. So why does Ethics relate to other Sciences? It is connected to other sciences since it
explores what it means to be a rational being or having reason or understanding and what that means in
terms of relationships with other creatures, not just human beings but all creatures. Having said that,
studying human nature and behavior from a moral perspective is the focus and locus of ethics. And
human behavior is the formal object of ethics, while morality is the material object. The formal object,
or true form, or, if you prefer, the perspective from which the material object is viewed, is what
essentially distinguishes one discipline from another. The material object is usually shared by numerous
sciences. And speaking of sciences, let’s now talk about the relationship that Ethics have with the other
sciences.

In this discussion we will focus on how Ethics, as a science which studies the nature of man and the
human conduct, is especially related to other sciences which likewise deal with the study of human
nature and human conduct.

Let’s start with ethics and logic. Ethics is the study of correct action or doing, while Logic studies the
process of correct and organized thinking. Doing follows thinking. Ergo, logic is aimed at the right
thinking and Ethics is aimed at the right acting or right doing and behaviour. Based on this info, Ethics
focuses first and foremost on the demands of the subjective human world, or world of people and
relationships. In the process communication, ethics focuses, and studies people’s feelings and emotional
states based on non-verbal information like gestures and how things are said because sometimes the
way we deliver the things we say is different from the message itself. So, that’s Ethics. Now, Logic is
focused on the demands of the material, nonhuman world, or world of things in one’s environment.
Also, Logic focuses on and studies what is done and what is said, or the contents or context of one’s
speech or message. When it comes to intellectual qualities, Ethics is people oriented while logic is task
oriented. Ethics also focuses on enhancing relationships, modifying content and forms of speech to
match and contradict what others expect to hear while logic is focused on not misleading a person and
giving him correct information. That’s their connection.

Now psychology and ethics both focus on understanding how people behave. But while Ethics looks at
how people should behave, Psychology analyzes how people actually behave. While ethics is interested
in man's moral responsibility or the impact of his behavior, psychology is not interested in the morality
of human behavior. The study of ethics is morality's perspective on human behavior. On the other hand,
psychology is the scientific study of mental and behavioral traits connected to a specific type of
behavior.

Moving on to sociology and Ethics. The study of social order is the focus of sociology, whereas the study
of moral order in society is the focus of ethics. If there is no moral order, there will be no such thing as
society. Therefore, moral standards and people's perspectives on what is good and bad in interpersonal
relationships form the basis of any community. Sociology deals with human relations in a society, but
human relations are based on the proper order, and the proper order comes from the proper practice of
moral laws and principles that control the actions of men and women in a community. Societies depend
on ethics for their fundamental principles.

The last one is ethics and economics. Economics as a science deal with the study if wages, labour,
production, and distribution of wealth. The study of these issues also involves relationships among
individuals. There are 3 ways in which ethics enters economics. First, economists' ethical principles
influence how they practice economics. Second, economic players such as consumers, employees, and
business owners have moral principles that influence how they behave. Third, because economic
institutions and policies have diverse effects on various people, ethical as well as economic assessments
are crucial.

So that’s the relation of ethics with other sciences. That’s it for my report. Thank you for listening.
Before I go, I’ll leave this quote by Martin Luther King which I find very relevant to our topics and the
subject, actually. The time is always right to do right. Now to discuss Morality and Other Phases of
Human Life, I’ll give the floor to our next reporter, sir Julius Buen.
