CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Street Lighting is an important factor for ensuring safety in the city and instilling a
sense of security in the mind of the citizens, but the cost associated with it is quite high which
is borne by the local municipalities. Smart street lighting is a cost-effective solution in an
urban environment which compromises of advance wireless communication techniques, low
cost LED lights and additional sensors which controls the intensity of light (IEEE, 2020).
This smart solar lamp also having a special function of Motion Detecting. We used
passive infrared (PIR) sensor, which automatically switch on the device when any living
object comes closer to it (Prabhat Ranjan, Shubham Kumar, Sujit Kumar,
Prof.P.R.Naregalkar, 2016). A motion sensor uses one or multiple technologies to detect
movement in an area. When a sensor detects motion, it sends a signal to the security system's
control panel, which connects to the monitoring center (Zhiming Gu, 2021). The brightness
of the lamps is being controlled in this project to reduce the power consumption. The
dimming of the lamps depends on the speed of object motion detected such as pedestrians,
cyclists and cars. The higher speed of moving object, the greater the level of intensity. For
this idea, the innovation of street lights is not quite the same as conventional street lights that
are controlled by timer switch or light sensor which automatically turns the street lights on
during sunset and off during sunrise (IEEE, 2018).
As the world is moving towards smart energy management, the system will require
changes not only in the way energy is supplied but in the way how the energy is efficiently
consumed. Development in civilization includes everything in human society and one of the
most important civilization indexes is the good transportation network. This includes streets,
roads, and highways that have to be adequately illuminated so that sufficient visibility is
guaranteed for the safety of the people traveling on the streets (Mrs.M.PriyaDharsini,
M.Keerthana, R.Keerthana, V.Malarvizhi, G.Meena, 2016). Detection system is designed for
the smart lighting system. Experimental investigations of the detection system were made
with different motion sensors. Based on the results comparative analysis was performed and
optimal conditions for the detection system operation were found (Matveev et al 2016).
Statement of the Problem
This study focuses on the benefits of smart light motion efficiency as perceived by the
students.
This study aims to answer the following questions:
1. What are the benefits of smart light motion efficiency as perceived by the students
when grouped according to their profile?
2. Is there a significant difference in the benefits of smart light motion efficiency as
perceived by the respondents when grouped and compared according to their profiles?
Hypothesis
There is no significant difference in the benefits of smart light motion efficiency as
perceived by the students when grouped according to their profile.
Framework
The study will focus on the Residence level of satisfaction with the Service Quality of
Smart light motion in Bacolod City, in consideration of their age, sex, civil status, and
location. The SERVQUAL dimensions for Convenient, security, affordable, safety and
assurance will be assessed by the respondents. The study's findings may help to improve
service quality and security while raising customer happiness with smart light motion.
Scope and Delimitation
The scope of this study is limited to the residents of Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.
This research topic will not convey topics that are not related to our study. We will use an
online survey platform to collect data starting October 2022 to November 2022.
Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be deemed beneficial for the following:
● Residents
- This is beneficial to people living in the city. Every night, the Smart Light Motion
Detectors can lighten the way where people are walking. It will help identify the
people and lessen the crimes.
● City
- Smart Light Motion Detectors can be put in any place where less people are
walking. It can give light to the dark places and areas in the city. It can help people to
feel safe walking at night.
● Aspiring stem students
- It can help stem students to have ideas in their future research paper. They can use
this study to discover and develop something by this given topic. It will expand their
knowledge when it comes to motion detectors.
● Future researchers
- This may be beneficial to future researchers as this study can be used to cater and
bridge gaps of information regarding the topic understudy. It can give insight and
discover something in the future.
Definition of terms
The following terms are defined in order to give a clear understanding of the terms
used in this study.
1. Smart Light Motion Detector. A light turns on when motion is detected. They can
be installed indoors, on walls, ceilings, and in doorways, or outside, on the exterior of
buildings and homes.
2. Residents. A person who lives somewhere permanently or on a long-term basis.
3. Energy Consumption. The total energy consumed by end users, such as households,
industry and agriculture.
4. Central Negros Electric Cooperative, Inc. (CENECO). One of the 121 electric
cooperatives in the Philippines. It was incorporated in Bacolod City, Negros
Occidental. CENECO distributes power over the Calumangan-San Enrique
transmission lines.
5. Government. People in position that deals and makes plans for saving Energy
Consumption in the City.
CHAPTER 2
METHODOLOGY
The research design employed in this study, the study's participants, the research
instrument to be used to gather data, its validity and reliability, the data-collection process,
ethical considerations, and the statistical techniques used to analyze and interpret the data are
all covered in this chapter.
Research Design
This study we will be using the descriptive comparative design that will describe the
benefits of Smart Light Motion Detector to the residents of Brgy.16 and Brgy. Mandalagan.
This research design is considered the most suitable way to answer the problem. The
questionnaire is the most convenient way to gather information under this design.
Respondents of the Study
The researchers will first ask permission from the residents of 2 Barangays in Bacolod
City. The respondents of this study will be the residents of Barangay Mandalagan and
Barangay 16. A survey on the benefits of the Smart Light Motion Detector will be conducted
to determine the satisfaction of respondents towards Smart Light Motion Detector.
Research Locale
The study will take place in Brgy.16 and Brgy. Mandalagan, Bacolod City.
Data Gathering Instrument
Describe your instrument
Validity
The idea of validity argued that a test is valid if it measures the factors that it
claims to measure (Kelly 1927,p. 14). The survey questionnaire will be validated by four (4)
research experts at La Consolacion College Bacolod. With the use of Content Validity Ratio
(CVR), the rating of 1-essential, 2-useful but not essential, and 3-not essential will be rated
by the panels.
Reliability
Reliability refers to the consistency of a measure (ICA Chiang, 2015). The
measurement is recognized as reliable if the same result can be consistently obtained by
applying the same methodologies under the same circumstances. Using Cronbach's Alpha
method, will illustrate the measure used to judge the accuracy or internal consistency of the
survey items.
Data Gathering Procedure
The researchers will personally ask permission from the respondents in the chosen
barangay of Bacolod City. As soon as the respondents give their permission, the researchers
will distribute the questionnaires to the respondents. The researcher will assure the
respondents that the written responses will be treated with the utmost confidentiality and will
be only used for academic purposes.
Ethical Consideration
The researcher will meet with the respondents in person or virtually and discuss the
purpose of the study and why their involvement is important. The respondents' most
convenient and agreeable time will be chosen for the data collection schedule. Each data
collection will be conducted informally to ensure that the respondents will feel comfortable in
their private facilities, to promote open communication.
