Concept Notes:
Metal Ions with Variable Oxidation
Some metal ions have variable oxidation numbers. These ions exhibit more than one
oxidation numbers. In naming these ions, two systems are used - the IUPAC system or the
stock method and the traditional method.

IUPAC ( or stock method) names metals as is and uses roman numerals in parenthesis
affixed after the name to indicate the oxidation state of the metal. The traditional system
uses the Latin names of the metals which end with -ous or -ic. The suffix -ous is used to
indicate the lower oxidation number and -ic is used to indicate higher oxidation number.

An ionic compound is named first by its cation and then by its anion. The cation has the
same name as its element. For example, K+1 is called  the potassium ion, just as K is called the
potassium atom. The anion is named by taking the elemental name, removing the ending,
and adding “-ide.” For example, F-1 is called fluoride, for the elemental name, fluorine. The “-
ine” was removed and replaced with “-ide.” To name a compound, the cation name and the
anion named are added together. For example, NaF is also known as sodium fluoride.

These systems of naming metal ions with multiple oxidation numbers may be well
understood by observing the table below.

Naming Ionic Compounds with Transition Metals

Direction: Write the correct name for each compound below.

a. Valence of transition metal = roman numeral (to find valence of Transition Metal use
subscript and valence of nonmetal/radical and rule of zero valence for compounds)
b.Transition metal + nonmetal = end in ide
