ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROBLEM – I

Inter State Bus Terminal -Lucknow

What is Inter State Bus Terminal?
A bus terminal is the point where a bus route starts or ends, where vehicles stop, turn or
reverse, and wait before departing on their return journeys. It’s also where passengers board
and alight from vehicles. It also often provides a convenient point where services can be
controlled from.
In India, an Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) is a bus terminus that provides bus service to
destinations located in other states. An ISBT may also provide bus services to destinations in
the same state.

The size and nature of a terminal may vary, from a roadside bus stop with no facilities for
passengers or bus crews, to a purpose-built off-road bus station offering a wide range of
facilities.

If the number of vehicles arriving and departing is low, a roadside bus stop, with no facilities,
will normally be adequate. With a large number of vehicles arriving and departing, it may be
necessary to provide off-road bus station facilities for the convenience of passengers and to
reduce traffic congestion.

INTER STATE BUS TERMINAL IN LUCKNOW:

As we know Purvanchal expressway was already planned to ensure smooth and excellent
connectivity between capital region of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow to other Purvanchal
cities like Faizabad / Ambedkarnagar / Ghazipur / Ballia / Azamgarh / Mau / Ghosi / Gorakh
pur / Varanasi.
To cater the transport facility for these cities’ government has proposed an interstate bus
terminal, which is Chand Sarai bus terminal at Sultanpur road, Lucknow. Purvanchal
Expressway will be a major transportation junction of Lucknow in coming years.
NEED OF THE INTER STATE BUS TERMINAL:
As we know, we have 3 interstate bus terminals in Lucknow, but due to high demand and
congestion factor city need an ISBT to cater the transportation need of the purvanchal cities.

DESIGN MEASURES
The bus terminal is proposed for around 600 buses which will include intercity and interstate
