OVERVIEW
GENERAL
The Rotate MD-11 Freighter is a wide body cargo aircraft powered by three high bypass ratio turbofan engines.
It is a fully automated aircraft with manual backup operation for most systems. All instrumentation is electronic
except in the case of the standby instruments provided as a backup.
The following chapters describe all systems that are part of this simulation, and explain the indications and
functionality of the instruments, annunciators and controls that can be operated in the Rotate MD-11.
The Rotate MD-11 mimics as closely as possible the original model, but some features have been omitted or
simplified. In a few cases we have had to adapt or modify some characteristics in order to integrate them to the
software simulation medium.
AVIONICS AND CONTROLLERS
These devices have been simulated:
- Six display units (DUs) in the center instrument panel show the PFD, ND, engines and system displays.
- Three display electronic units (DEU) drive the DUs.
- Two electronic control panels (ECP) on both ends of the FCP (glareshield) control data display on the
PFDs and NDs.
- The systems display control panel (SDCP) on the aft pedestal.
- Two digital air data computers (CADC).
- The auto flight system (AFS) consists of two flight control computers (FCC), and the flight control panel
FCP (glareshield).
- The flight management system (FMS) consists of two flight management computers (FMC) in the
avionics compartment and two multifunction control display units (MCDU) on the forward pedestal.
- Three inertial reference units (IRU) and an IRS control panel on the forward overhead panel.
- The fuel system controller (FSC) and the FUEL control panel on the overhead and the ancillary fuel
control system controller (AFCS).
- The environmental system controller (ESC) the AIR control panel on the overhead panel.
- The electrical power control unit (EPCU) and the ELEC control panel on the overhead panel.
- The hydraulic system controller (HSC) and the HYD control panel on the overhead panel.
- The miscellaneous system controller (MSC).
The HSC, ESC, and FSC are dual channel controllers in which certain transient faults can be cleared by switching
channels. This is accomplished by selecting the associated system to the manual mode, and then back to auto.
Record any fault that is cleared by this procedure in the AML. Preflight tests that are in progress will be
interrupted by this procedure and must be performed again either automatically or manually.

COCKPIT
GENERAL
The cockpit of the MD-11 is arranged in the conventional manner. The Captain's seat is on the left and the First
Officer's seat is on the right. There is a right observer's seat behind the First Officer's seat. Storage facilities for
loose equipment are provided at each station in addition to storage areas in the coat closet.
When the aircraft is ready for normal flight, most of the switches on the overhead panel will be dark (not
illuminated). This informs the crew that the panel is in the correct configuration and no abnormalities are
present. Under normal conditions, little used switches will illuminate blue as advisory indications.

ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT SYSTEM
GENERAL
The electronic instrument system (EIS) consists of:
- Six display units (DU) installed in the instrument panel.
- 2 electronic flight instrument control panels (ECP) on the glareshield.
- One system display control panel (SDCP) on the aft pedestal.
- Three display electronic units (DEU) installed in the electronics bay.
The DUs will show this information:
● DU1 and DU6 are the primary flight displays (PFD). See the Automatic Flight chapter.
● DU2 and DU5 are navigation displays (ND). See the Flight Instruments chapter.
● DU3 is the engine and alert display (EAD). See the Aural/Visual Warning chapter.
● DU4 is the system display (SD). See the associated system chapter and the Aural/Visual Warning
chapter.
In case of DU failure or if turning off a DU, or during emergency power condition, the EIS will reconfigure to
display all data required for operation of the remaining DUs.
Six controls are provided for on/off and manual brightness control of each DU.
Seven cue switches on the SDCP allow the flight crew to identify the system that is generating alerts and/or
warnings. Pushing the associated cue switch will cause the associated system synoptic to be displayed on the
SD. Pushing CONSEQ or STATUS will display the corresponding alert page. If five or fewer DUs are operating,
pushing the ND switch will cause the existing SD to become an ND. If all six DUs are operating, THIRD NAV
DISPLAY NOT AVAILABLE will appear on DU4.
SOURCE selectors on the Captain's and F/O's source input select panels. Any of the three DEUs can provide data
for all six DUs, but only one independent ND.
FAILURE ANNUNCIATIONS
Invalid data and cross-side miscompared data are the two types of failure annunciations. Invalid data is
removed from the screen. Miscompared data is displayed with a miscompare flag.
When invalid data is removed from the screen, it may be replaced by a red or amber flag (some non-essential
data is removed from the screen only). These flags consist of an X covering the area of removed data.
DISPLAY SOURCE ANNUNCIATION
Normal on-side display sources are not annunciated. Abnormal (off-side) sources are annunciated near the
associated symbology. These annunciations are white if the Captain and First Officer displays are driven from
separate sources and amber if the displays are driven from the same source. Same source annunciation is
displayed on both sides. For a complete description, refer to the Abnormal Source Annunciations Table.

ABNORMAL SOURCE ANNUNCIATIONS
The data sources that feed the instruments (Flight Director, CADC, ILS, ...) are duplicated (or triplicated in some
cases). Normally Captain’s and First Officer’s instruments will feed from onside sources, i.e. Captain from side 1
and First Officer from side 2. This can be altered by the pilot using the corresponding switches located on either
side of the mail instrument panel (the front panel).
If the Captain or F/O selects an abnormal (crossed) data source, PFD and ND will show amber or white alerts
indicating the data channel that has been abnormally selected, e.g. FD1 (F/O on FD1), ILS2 (Capt on ILS2).

ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT SYSTEM ANNUNCIATOR LIGHT BUTTONS
1. ANNUN LT BRT/DIM BUTTON
Push to select between bright and dim mode of all annunciator lights and displays. Will not affect MASTER
WARNING or MASTER CAUTION lights.
2. ANNUN LT TEST BUTTON
When pushed:
-OVERSPEED voice warning sounds.
-Fail Xs appear in DUs.
-8s appear in FCP and CRP display windows.
-All annunciator lights illuminate (except MAINT INTOH ON in the fwd overhead panel and the MIC and IDENT
ON light on the ACPs)
If the button is held for more than 10 seconds, the following air system functions are tested in auto mode:
-Manifold fail detection system (MFDS).
-Engine 2 anti-ice duct test.
-CAC fans.
-Avionics fans.
-Trim air shutoff.
If one or more air system components fails the test, AIR SYS TEST FAIL, AIR MANF TEST FAIL or ENG DUCT TST
FAIL alert(s) will be displayed on the EAD. The air system test is inhibited in flight.

EIS SOURCE SELECTORS AND ANNUNCIATORS LIGHTS
CAPTAIN SOURCE INPUT SELECT PANEL
The captain’s EIS SOURCE has 3 positions. The normal (vertical) position is 1. In this position, DUs 1, 2 and 3
receive data from DEU1. In AUX position, DUs 1, 2 and 3 receive data from DEU3. In position 2, DUs 1, 2 and 3
receive data from DEU2.

FIRST OFFICER’S SOURCE INPUT SELECT PANEL
The First Officer’s EIS SOURCE has 3 positions. The normal (vertical) position is 2. In this position, DUs 4, 5 and 6
receive data from DEU2. In AUX position, DUs 4, 5 and 6 receive data from DEU3. In position 1, DUs 4, 5 and 6
receive data from DEU1.
