The Standard Numbering System:
❑ Used to organize maintenance tasks
❑ Conforms to ATA 100 Spec
❑ A 3-element code that identifies and segregates
subject matter by:
Chapter (system),
Section (subsystem), and
Subject (unit).
57

Aircraft Maintenance Task Oriented Support System
❑ An extension of the ATA 100 3-Element system.
❑ Assigns a unique numerical identity
to maintenance tasks.
❑ Consists of SIX elements:

Fault Isolation Manual
❑ Separate from the AMM, the FIM works hand-in-hand
with the Maintenance Diagnostic Computer (MDC)
❑ Provides sufficient data to isolate system/component malfunctions that occur in the
aircraft systems
as quickly and as accurately as possible.
❑ Generally, it is limited to the replacement of
line replaceable units (LRU) and/or wiring repairs
necessary to correct the specific malfunction.
❑ Not necessarily the first place to go when you
have a pilot write-up, but it is a very useful tool.
