Language Through the Arts

 In groups of 3-4 students, interview teachers, friends, family, or community

members and ask them what they know about Leonardo da Vinci. Prepare an

interview with 3-4 questions. Then, visit the school library or surf the internet

and add more information about Da Vinci to the information you had from the

interviews.

1. Have you heard of or have any knowledge about Leonardo Da Vinci?

If I have heard of Leonardo Da Vinci, he was a great painter.

2. Do you know some of Leonardo Da Vinci's works?

Yes, I have been able to see one of his works that I consider his best work, which is

the Mona Lisa.

3. Do you consider art to be an important career?

Art is a career that I consider unimportant because today it is dominated by

technology.

4. Do you consider Leonardo Da Vinci to be an important artist?

Yes, because he was a master capable of materializing the idea of beauty in works of

disturbing suggestion and delicate poetry.

Leonardo Da Vinci

Italian artist, thinker, and researcher who, for his insatiable curiosity and a

multifaceted genius, represents the most complete model of the Renaissance scholar.
Leonardo da Vinci was the illegitimate son of a Florentine lawyer, who did not

allow him to meet his mother, a modest peasant girl. He trained as an artist in

Florence, in the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio; but much of his career was

developed in other Italian cities such as Milan (where he was between 1489 and

1499 under the patronage of Duke Ludovico Sforza, called the Moor) or Rome

(where he worked for Julius de Medici). Although he practiced the three fine arts,

none of his sculptures are preserved and it seems that none of the buildings he

designed were ever built, so there are only traces of his work as a sculptor and

architect in his notes and personal sketches.

It is, therefore, the pictorial work of Leonardo da Vinci that has made him stand out

as the great master of the "Cinquecento" (above even Michelangelo or Raphael) and

as a leading figure in the history of art. Of the twenty or so of his paintings that are

preserved, the Annunciation, The Virgin of the Rocks, The Holy Supper, The

Virgin, and St. Anne, The Adoration of the Magi, and the Portrait of Geneviève

Benzi stand out. The most famous is undoubtedly The Mona Lisa or La Gioconda, a

portrait toy modeled on Mona (short for Madonna) Lisa Gherardini, wife of

Francesco Giocondo.

However, Leonardo's genius directed him to so many different objectives that he

hardly had any influence on the progress of the different fields he touched, although

he did obtain a great personal prestige, which has lasted to the present day. Many of

the projects he undertook remained unfinished when new ones attracted his interest;

as for inventions, he limited himself to conceiving useful ideas but made no effort to

translate them into viable models that could work, so most of his research was
theoretical speculation without practical consequences. He concentrated on them

from 1516 onwards when his hands were affected by paralysis, he went to live in

France under the protection of King François I.
