BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Self -monitoring skills to prevent non- communicable diseases
(nutrition facts-health eating)

Self-Monitoring skills are competencies that will help us assess when we are
healthy or sick. It is important that we are familiar with the normal condition of our
bodies so that we can detect once when something is wrong. It is also important
that we have information, such as our vaccination record so that we can assess
our risk factors and we can plan what to do as early as possible.
Programs and policies on non-communicable disease prevention and control

Non communicable disease (NCD) cannot be transmitted from one person to

another. Many of these diseases are caused by unhealthy lifestyle. Some do not
cause problems until the person is quite old.

As a grade 7 student, it is your responsibility to impart knowledge and be

an advocate for health to your fellow students, family and community that you
live in. With that responsibility on your shoulder, this module will help you equipped
with vast knowledge and understanding about prevention and control of non-
communicable diseases.

Agencies responsible for noncommunicable disease prevention

And control

A noncommunicable disease is a noninfectious health condition that cannot be

spread from person to person. It lasts for a long period of time. This is also known
as chronic disease which is a combination of genetic, physiological, lifestyle, and
environmental factors.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs, according to World Health Organization,) kill

41 million people each year, equivalent to 71% of all deaths globally. Each year,
15 million people die from a NCD between the ages of 30 and 69 years; over 85%
of these "premature" deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.

Cardiovascular diseases account for most NCD deaths, or 17.9 million people
annually, followed by cancers (9.0 million), respiratory diseases (3.9million), and
diabetes (1.6 million). These 4 groups of diseases account for over 80% of all
premature NCD deaths.

Detection, screening and treatment of NCDs, as well as palliative care, are key
components of the response to NCDs.

• Non-communicable diseases are not caused by pathogens rather, by how

people live, by conditions with which they are born or by the hazards around
them. It also includes diseases caused by a breakdown of the body tissues
(degenerative diseases), poor diet, environmental and occupational hazards,
stress and tension. The common non-communicable diseases are allergy,
asthma, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and renal failure.
They can be prevented and controlled by physical activities or regular exercise,

• healthy eating, not smoking, weight management, routine medical check-up,

and stress management.

• When we say prevention it refers to measures that are applied to prevent the
occurrence of a disease. When we say control it refers to measures that are
applied to prevent transmission after the disease has occurred. Most of the
measures for prevention and control of communicable diseases are relatively
easy and can be applied using the community’s own resources.

Healthy habits prevent germs and diseases from spreading. Learn and practice
healthy habits.

D-drink enough amount of water

R-reduce stress
E-eat healthy and exercise regularly

A-avoid smoking

M-manage your weight

• Based on EO No. 366 for Global action plan for the prevention and control of
NCDs 2013-2020 developed by WHO, the Essential Non-Communicable Diseases
Division (ENCDD) of Disease Prevention and Control Bureau (DPCB) should
• develop policies, standards and guidelines for the prevention and control of
NCDs.
• develop plans, programs and projects to carry out preventive and control
strategies
• assist and strengthen capacity to measure and analyze the burden of
degenerative diseases.
