Course Objectives:
 To identify and recognize the specific purposes of specification, estimation and costing in architecture.
 To impart knowledge on the types of Specifications and process of developing specifications and preparation of Estimate from drawings and specifications.
 To impart knowledge on preparation of Bill of Quantities (BOQ) and Priced BOQ to arrive at Costing of a Project.

Course Contents/Syllabus:

Module I- Specification
Definition and purpose of specifications in Architecture. Types of Specification (Material Specification and Item Specification).
Structure and methodology of writing General/Technical Specification of Civil Works and detailed Item Specifications of Earthwork,

PCC, RCC, Brick work, Plaster, DPC, flooring, roofing, waterproofing in substructure, waterproofing in superstructure, Internal
building Finishes, tile work in Toilet and Kitchen, door and window work in Wood as well as aluminum and exterior building
Finishes etc.
Module II- Estimation & Costing
Introduction to Estimation and Costing and related formats and the project stages of preparation of the same. Introduction to Quantity
Surveying (QS) and methods of QS (centerline and long wall-short wall methods). Types of estimates, methods of estimation and
Plinth area rate.
Preparation of abstract of estimate for loadbearing structure and framed structure for a two storied, two room building with basement
(B+G+1). 40%
Preparation of Bill of Quantities (BOQ) for the above building, using CPWD specification. Preparation of priced BOQ as per Delhi
schedule of rates (DSR) and detailed Project Costing. Summary of priced BOQ.

Module III - Analysis of Rates 20%

Principles of analysis of rates, factors affecting the rate analysis, workout the rate analysis for different item of works such as
Earthwork, PCC, RCC, Brick work, Plaster, DPC, flooring, roofing, waterproofing in substructure, waterproofing in superstructure,
Internal building Finishes, tile work in Toilet and Kitchen, door and window work in Wood as well as aluminum. Exterior building
Finishes.
Module IV :Professional Skill Development Activities

Preparation of detailed & plinth area rate estimate of a project based on previous design project.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLO):

CLO 1 Students will be able to classify different types of Estimate and Specifications, and their specific purposes with respect to design.
CLO 2 Students will be able to build Estimate of a project from drawings and specifications.
CLO 3 Students will be able to Evaluate and Develop, Bill of Quantities (BOQ) and its abstract for a small scale project.

Pedagogy for Course Delivery:


Lecture based learning shall make the fundamental concepts clear. Tutorials to be conducted for a small Project of preparation of Technical and Item
Specifications and BOQ of a small building.
