English for Academic Preparation Program (EAP) Objective_ __________________________
To raise the student’s English proficiency in all areas to enable students to successfully progress to
an academic program at Laurentian University. In addition, the EAP programs familiarize
international students with the Western approach to education and Laurentian University’s
academic requirements.
METHODOLOGY____________________________________________________________
The Fall 2022 English for Academic Preparation (EAP) program will be hybrid delivery. Students
will have the opportunity to study English in the classroom and remotely in a synchronous format.
Classin (virtual learning platform) will be used for remote learning. Students will have two
instructors teaching six key skill areas: Reading, Writing, Grammar, Listening, Speaking and Study
Skills. Each class throughout the day will be designated to a specific skill; however, other skills
may be incorporated into the lesson as they are related. In addition, EAP is a preparation course
focusing on academic English skills. A variety of sources will be employed in addition to program
textbooks. These include: magazine/newspaper articles/academic journals, open-source
textbooks with appropriate readings/exercises, TOEFL/IELTS/CAEL practice exercises, YouTube,
podcasts, and a myriad of digital resources.
A variety of activities will be implemented each week to assist with language development. These
include but are not exclusive to pair and group work assignments, speaking exercises
(spontaneous/practiced), quizzes, journal writing, grammar concepts and vocabulary building
strategies. Every attempt will be made to have students actively use the English language in a
meaningful, relevant manner to increase understanding and fluency. Weekly, independent work
will be assigned during the week and/or on weekends and is an expected part of the students’
learning and education for the semester.

Final exam will result in a final grade of “F”.

overall grades. Attendance will be taken daily.
If you miss class for any reason, it will be your responsibility to find out what you missed and how
you can make up the work. Your participation grade and the quality of your work will suffer if you
miss classes. The English for Academic Preparation (EAP) Program excuses absences for certain
reasons (illness, medical emergency, and the death of an immediate family member), provided the
cause of absence is appropriately documented. The English for Academic Preparation (EAP)
Program adheres to Laurentian University’s Attendance Policy whereby absences in excess of 20%
of course time can result in failure of the course.
