INTRODUCTION

The social media has a great impact in our society, it helps us to fasten our work.

Social media is somehow a form of communication such as talking or spending time to

the people in the society by means of using websites or any electronic devices that we can

use. The importance of this topic is that for us to know the other usage or effect of social

media in our society by how we can benefit from it and on how we can deal with it. The

main reason in choosing this topic is that it is very interesting topic because we are living

in the 21st century world with the great or big influence of social media. The Senior High

students of San Simon High School will benefit in conducting this research, because it

aims to know the possible effects of social media usage to their behaviour that may affect

their academic performance.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

We all know that social media can help us in our daily lifestyle, By means of

searching or finding an information in a faster and a reliable way. We conducted this

research topic because we want to know the effects of using social media in the academic

performance of the Senior High Students of San Simon High School. Social media have a

great impact to our education, it help us to fasten our research work. Social media plays

an important role in every student’s life, it is easier and convenient to access information,

provide data and communicate via social media. But before, the work was very hard but

now because of the help of the social media it can make our work faster and easier. Social

media has a damaging effect on the daily lifestyle of the students, since it negatively

2
affect relationship with others, it causes them to be inattentive and can get cyberbullied.

The type of this problem exist because there are a lot of people who use social media in

an improper way, mostly the Senior High students of San Simon High School, without

knowing that social media can influence their lifestyle and behaviour that may affect their

study habits, as an observation, most of the students place a large amount of time in using

their mobile phones instead of studying their lesson, most of the time before the

examination, instead of reading their notes, they’re busy with their gadgets and after the

examination some of them got a failing grades that may affect their academic

performance.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The use of social media became popular in our present time, because it help us to

communicate better and faster. The growing total number of use of social media to the

students may not been totally summarized. According to Jacobsen and Forste (2011) they

say that the use of social media is one of the most important factors that may affects the

academic performance of the students. Many parents are worried, because using a lot of

time in social media can affect the behaviour and health status of the students that may

also affect their academic performance. Spending a lot of time using social media can

occupied the time of the students to study their lesson that may affect their quarterly

grade. In conducting this research, it also aims to know what kind of social media sites

that the students are addicted or spending a lot of time in using it, it identifies the other

possible effects of social media usage when it comes to the academic performance of the

Senior High Students of San Simon High School.

3
Specific Questions:
1. What are the reasons why students visit their social sites?

2. What kind of Social Media do the students visit every day?

3. How many hours do the students spend in using it?

General/Research Question:

Chapter II

Review of Related Literature

The Social Media plays a big role in every student’s life, it makes their

paper or research work to finish faster in a small amount of time. Social Media usage

influences today’s modern world, not only the students but all the people who use Social

Media. According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, Social Media is a form of electronic

communication through which people create online communities to share information,

ideas, personal messages or etc. Social Media help us to communicate in our relatives,

friends, classmates and other people in a fastest way. It also help us to gather more

information by means of searching or finding the reliable data that we need.

Social Media usage has a great impact when it comes to education, it helps

the students to make their work faster and easier and convenient to access information

and provide a market of ideas and communicate via social media. Beyond those positive

effects, there are also underlying negative effects Of Social Media. The use of social

media is one of the most important factors that may affect the academic performance of

the students, that idea or quotation was also used in a research paper in the Journal of

Education Volume 6, November 6, 2015. A research that was conducted in Kaforidua

Polytechnic in Ghana. According to the researcher that conducted that research, Many

Parents are worried, because using a lot of time in social media can affect the behaviour

of the students that may also affect their academic performance. Another thing is,

according to Martin (2008) and Lusk (2010), to them social media is the use of Facebook,

blogs, twitter, my space and LinkedIn for the purpose of communication, sharing photos

as well as video. Same as through, most Senior High Students of San Simon High School

6
uses Facebook, most of the time it affects their study habits, instead of reading their

notes, they’re just reading the post in the newsfeed of their Facebook account.

According to some senior high students based on their observation most of

their classmates before midterm, students do not review or read their notes or study their

lessons, but when it comes to their social media account like Facebook they’re always

active, during the midterm most of the students have failing grades and some of them

caught cheating during the exam. As we can see, social media has a negative impact

when using it in an improper way that may also affect their behaviour and lifestyle that

can influence their academic performance. Another thing is there are also side to side

effect of social media usage to the students when it comes to their writing skills and

spelling. (Obi, Bulus, Adamu, and Sala’at, 2012) Social media affects student’s use of

English, they use short-handwriting when chatting with their friends and unconsciously

get used to it thereby replicating same errors during examinations.

Students use their phones during their free time, they chat with their

friends with their electronic devices, and they also use the Messenger application wherein

they can type the message they want to send, most students uses short cut words for faster

way, but in contrary, they’re not aware that they also applied it to their daily life even in

their school, resulting in a wrong spelling during their written activities and

examinations. Behind those effects there are also benefits that the students can obtain.

(Yunus and Salehi, 2012) Students gain more vocabulary, improve their writing skills and

reduce their spelling mistakes through social media usage. There are some applications or

sites wherein, it can help the students to improve their spelling, there are also mobile

keyboard that can help students to know if their spelling is wrong or correct, it

7
automatically corrects their spelling. Through those helpful and useful application, it

gives the student another way to learn. Social media is part of student’s life, they learn

with the help and use of social media, not only in their school life but in their daily life.

(Wheeler, Yeomans, Rifkins, Longnecker, Leah and Ortia, 2009) Students’ academic life,

has moved to a different dimension since the introduction of these social media networks

and several studies have affirmed that social media plays an important role on students

higher education.

The role of social media to the students life is like a train and the rail,

without the rail, the train has no way to go, just like the students in the present generation,

without the help of social media there are limited way for a student to learn. (Junco al et,

2010) We all know that social media are a collection of internet websites, services, and

practices to support collaboration, community building, participation and sharing.

Through those services and websites, it helps the students to discover new things and go

outside their comfort living, they can learn advanced information and they can also be

aware of their environment because social media is always updated for current events

happening in the society. Most of the studies shows that social media make the students

or other people in the society to be socialize and friendly through their social networking

sites and help them to be more creative and productive. According to Nguyen (2015),

social media gives students an excellent opportunities for them to read and write in an

effective forums and for collaboration and discussion and powerful tools to enable

scaffolding learning or mentoring. There are social blogs and forums where other

students are member that is a networking sites wherein they can share their thoughts and

opinions towards the specific things that occur in the society. There are also online clubs

8
where students join, most of the online clubs are educational, but others are just a bad

influence for a students, other research shows that through those online communities

some people or mostly students can be negatively affect, other people meet and create

their relationship through online chats and messaging. In that way it can affect the

students’ academic performance, instead of studying their lessons, they’re busy for their

social life through social media.

We cannot deny that today’s modern technology, most of teens meet

their boyfriend or girlfriend through their social media accounts, in that way it can affect

the student study habit, by means of, instead reading his or her notes he/she is reading

the conversation they had with his/her boy/girlfriend. In the help of social media it helps

the students to make their world a bit larger, because we all know social media is large

and wide variety of different people with different background and perspective about life.

(Arquero and Esteban, 2013) Social media undoubtedly generate new opportunities to

engage students in higher education as they are remarkably effective at connecting people

and facilitating the exchange of information. We can also say that social media engages

the students to be more competitive and creative that can help them in their academic

performance, to be socialize is to be engage in the society’s moves, as the students

learned, they will acquire knowledge how to be more formative in order to be part of the

society. (Jain, Verma, Tiwari, 2012) The research entitled “the impact of social

networking in promoting education” revealed that students benefit from chatting with

other students, teacher and external sources to acquire knowledge. People all over the

world have been enjoying the benefits of using technology nowadays, in the past,

communicating and free sharing of thoughts between people are restricted by long

9
distance, race, and even religion. (Astodello, 2016) But now, these barriers can no longer

stop the flow of information and knowledge because now the new world of social

networking allows free sharing of thoughts through online, social networking sites such

as Facebook, instagram, twitter, and the Like.

We can see that social media is also important when it comes to our

online communication, it help us to reach faster the people we want to communicate with.

According to Dixon (2012), he said that social media involves the use of web based

technologies to transform one way communication into an interaction online dialogue.

Social networking sites helps the students to communicate to their teachers even in their

classmates when they need an information about their school paper works. Online

dialogue such as calling each other or video call is a new way of communication wherein

the students and other people in the society may benefit from it. (Schneider, 2009) Social

media became more popular between 2004 and 2016, after Facebook was created.

Facebook for example has over 500 million members and still growing and

approximately 85% of ungraduated students are Facebook users. Using of Facebook is

actually a best way to communicate and also to learn something from your friends, but

using it in an improper way may result to a damaging effect to a person’s lifestyle and

behaviour, the same way, using a lot of time for your social networking sites may results

from being lazy and unable to do house chores and schools works.

The current generation of the students has been exposed to a technology

which led them to rely on social media such as Facebook and twitter. (Brubaker, 2013) It

has an impact on the academic performance when the students overuse or multitask while

doing their schoolwork’s. Relying on social media is not a good way of learning, people

10
can use social media to learn but relying on it instead of thinking their own idea is an

improper way of using social media. According to Nicole, Charles, and Cliff 92007), they

found out that students use social networking sites approximately 30 minutes, throughout

the day as a part of their daily routine. Using social networking accounts in a day is not

bad, but there are some people or students that abuses the use of social media, according

to some observation, most students use their phone to open their social media account for

about 2-3 hours and above a day, not knowing the negative effects of improper use of

their mobile phones. (Anonymous, 2014) In 2012, more than 1.4 billion internet user

accessed to social networks and these figures are still expected to grow as mobile devices

usage and mobile social networks increasingly gain traction. (Boyd and Ellison,

2017)The use of social media in student’s everyday life is very important, that is why the

use of social networks is increasing. The evolution of internet has led to its usage as the

best medium of communication whereby two third of the internet world’s population

visits social networking sites, thus serving as communication and connection tools. These

networking sites are referred to as social media. Social networking sites is another way to

connect to other people even in your love ones.

The social media is a faster and reliable way for better communication.

As we can observe today, even you are a thousand of miles away, you can contact the

person you want to, and by the help of social media you can stay in touch of them that is

how the social media influences and help us in our everyday life it makes our life easier.

(Heyam, 2014) Social media is considered to be the fastest growing web application in

the 21st century and this rapid development is being backed by technological

advancement. We are living in the 21st century world with the great influence of modern

11
technology and social media, most of the people today are updated when it comes to

social media, because social media has become part of their life, wherein using of phones

in their everyday life is important, in way of communication and contacting other people.

According to Adaja (2013), social media has the capacity to improve the participation

because of the textual and audio visual characteristics appeal, the openness, conversation

nature and connectedness. Social media help us to boost our self-esteem where we can

express our own feelings, emotions, and opinions toward others.

According to Jha, and Bhardwaj (2012), social media exploded as a

category of online discourse which enables people to create contents, share them,

bookmark them, and network at a prodigious rate. Other people share their own

information or ideas through blogging, creating videos to share and inform others,

creating own websites to give knowledge to others. Blogs and forums is a kind of social

media wherein people are free to be part of a group blogging to share their own

information, through those kinds of social media it gives the students or other people in

the society an opportunity to learned new discoveries in the present society. (Slaughter,

2012) Social media networking have deeply transformed the learning when students are

connected to earn better grades at school. Social media as part of every students life helps

them to boost their self-esteem, helps them to be more productive that can help them

when it comes to their academic performance. As a conclusion, other researchers find out

the possible effects of social media usage to the students that is related to this research

topic, those data or information will help the researcher of this topic to gather ideas and

create an answer to the existing problem.
