TCN (Chart Work) Assignment 1
CHART NO. B. A. 5048 (Ireland South Coast)
Notes:
(a) Position of landmarks are approximate and are for easy identification only.
(b) Deviation Card 2, Variation 50W, HE 12m, Ship’s speed 12 knots if needed to solve the question and not
mentioned in the question.
(c) Luminous range diagram may be used if required.
(d) The answers may not match exactly due to variable errors of plotting tools.
1. A vessel steering a course of 050°(C) observed Old Head of Kinsale Light (51°36.3’N, 008°32’W) bearing
350° (C) distance 4 miles off at 2000 hours. At what time and position would Bally Cotton Light
(51°49.5’N, 007°59’W) be abeam on port side if the current was known to be setting South-Easterly at
3.5 knots.
(Concept – Compass to true, Allowing for current)
(Answer – CMG 050° (T), SMG 11.7 knots, Bally cotton light abeam Time 2210, Position – 51°48.8’ N
007°57.8’ W)
2. (a) At 1000 hours a vessel observes Kinafarna Hill Peak (298) – approximate position 52°03’N,
007°43’W and Radio Mast (155) – approximate position 51°57’N, 007°45’W in transit when the echo
sounder showed UKC of 45m. If the vessel’s draft was 7m and tide was 2m above the Chart Datum,
find the vessel’s position.
(b) From the above position find the gyro course to steer and engine speed required to arrive one mile
south of Pilot Lookout Light – approximate position 52°09’N, 006°59’W at 1230 hours. Current was
setting Easterly at 3 knots and North Westerly wind causing a Leeway of 3°. (Gyro Error 2° High).
(Concept – Transit bearing PL, Depth Contour PL, Counteracting wind and current, converting true to
gyro)
(Answer – Charted depth should be 50 m, 1000 Position – 51°50’ N 007°44.4’ W, Gyro CTS 049° (G),
Engine Speed 10.9 knots)
3. (a) At 1830 hours a vessel in D.R. position 51°30’N, 008°12’W observed star X – intercept 3’ (away),
Azimuth 350° (T) and Star Y – observed Long 008°17’W, Azimuth 070° (T). Find the vessel’s position at
1830 hours.
(b) From the 1830 hours position vessel aims to reach a position with Ballycotton Island Light bearing
270° (T) x 10 miles off. Find the Compass Course to Steer if the current was setting 160° (T) at 3 knots
and Northerly wind causing 3°Leeway. Also find the ETA / steaming time to reach the destination.
(Concept – Celestial PLs, Counteracting wind and current, Converting True to Compass)
(Answer – 1830 Position – 51°26.4’ N 008°15.0’ W, CTS 040° (C), SMG 10.2 knots, ETA 2130 / 0300)
4. A vessel in DR Position 51°30’N, 007°30’W, observes the following:
Star X – Azimuth 050° (T), Intercept 2’ Away
Star Y – Azimuth 130° (T), Intercept 3’ Towards
Find the Ship’s Position.
From the above position, it is required to make good a course to reach a position 3 miles due south of
Old Head of Kinsale. The current is estimated to set 145° (T) x 2 knots. After running for 2.5 hours a fix
was obtained as 51°30’N, 008°30’W. Find the true set and drift of the current.
(Concept – Celestial PLs, counteracting current, Finding true set and drift)
(Answer – Position – 51°26.0’ N 007°29.0’ W, Actual Current Set 244° (T), Drift 10.6’)
