TCN (Chart Work) Assignment 3
CHART NO. B. A. 5048 (Ireland South Coast)
Notes:
(a) Position of landmarks are approximate and are for easy identification only.
(b) Deviation Card 2, Variation 50W, HE 12m, Ship’s speed 12 knots if needed to solve the question and not
mentioned in the question.
(c) Luminous range diagram may be used if required.
(d) The answers may not match exactly due to variable errors of plotting tools.
1. A vessel steering 2030 (C) observes Hook Head Light (52007.4’N, 006055.8’W) bearing 2890 (C) at 1900
hours, at 1920 hours same light bore 3270 (C) and at 2000 hours it bore 0070 (C). If the current was setting
3010 (T), find:
(a) Vessel’s position at 2000 hours
(b) SMG & CMG
(c) Rate of Current
(Concept – Three bearing Method)
(Answer – 2000 Position – 51°55.9’ N 006°58.1’ W, CMG 217° (T), SMG 11.8 knots, Rate of current 3.0
knots)
2. While steering a course of 0730 (T), Mine Head Light House (51059’N, 007036’W) was observed to bear
0250 (T) at 2000 hours. At 2020 hours it bore 3450 (T) and at 2040 hours it bore 2930 (T). The current was
estimated to set 0280 (T). Find the vessel’s position at 2020 and 2040 hours. What must be steered to
make good 0730 (T).
(Concept – Three bearing Method, Counteracting current)
(Answer – 2020 Position – 51°55.0’ N 007°33.0’ W, 2040 Position – 51°57.2’ N 007°26.0’ W, CTS 085° (T))
3. While steering 2580 (C) Bally Cotton Island Light was last sighted in visibility of 5 miles. HE 8 meters. After
one hour, in clear visibility, Roche’s Point Light (51047’N, 008015’W) changed from white to red. Current
set 1400 (T) at 3 knots. Leeway 40 due to Northerly wind. Calculate course and speed made good, and
both positions.
(Concept – First / Last Sighting, Sector light as a PL, Transfer of PC)
(Answer – CMG 248° (T), SMG 11.0 knots, Initial Position – 51°37.4’ N 008°05.2’ W, Final Position – 51°33.2’
N 008°21.7’ W)
4. A vessel steering a course of 2450 (T) at speed of 12 knots observes Conningbeg Light Vessel (52002.5’N,
006039.5’W) bearing 2750 (T) at 2000 hours, 2990 (T) at 2020 hours and 3590 (T) at 2050 hours. The
current in the area estimated to set in the direction of 2050. Find the vessel’s position at 2050 hours, the
course made good, speed made good and the rate of the current experienced.
(Concept – Three bearing Method)
(Answer – 2050 Position – 51°55.4’ N 006°39.2’ W, CMG 238° (T), SMG 14.3 knots, Rate 2.8 knots)
5. At 0812 hours, Hook Head Light House (52007.4’N, 006055.8’W) bore 2950 (C) and Conningbeg Light
Vessel (51002.4’N, 006039.4’W) bore 1670 (C).
The vessel then steered 1820 (T) at 9 knots in South Easterly gales through current setting 2500 (T) at 3
knots. Later maintaining same course and speed, Hook Head Light House dips at 1014 hours. Find
Compass Error and position of the ship at both times. HE = 12 meters, Leeway 80
(Concept – HSA, Raising / Dipping, Transfer of PC)
(Answer – Compass error 18° W, 0812 Position – 52°06.1’ N 006°42.6’ W, 1014 Position – 51°46.0’ N
006°56.9’ W)
6. A vessel on a course of 2700 (C) observes at 2000 hours Kinsale-A East Platform (51022’N, 007057’W) to
bear 2120 (C). At 2020 hours it bore 1820 (C) and at 2040 hours it again bore 1370 (C) while Kinsale-B
West Platform (51021.5’N, 008011’W) bore 1720 (C). Find:
(a) Ship’s position at 2000 hours and 2040 hours
(b) Set and Drift of the Current
(c) Course and Speed Made Good
(Concept – Three bearing Method)
(Answer – 2000 Position – 51°27’ N 007°50.4’ W, 2040 Position – 51°26.0’ N 008°01.0’ W, Set 146° (T),
Rate 3.7 knots, CMG 261° (T), SMG 10.0 knots)
