0 Introduction
This test method refers to the step by step procedure to be adopted for determining the conformity
of ESCALATOR, Auto walk and other similar type of equipment’s.
Establish by measurement that the dimensions of the ESCALATOR are within the defined
tolerance, as stated by the appropriate standard or manufacturer’s specification.

2.0 Terms
2.1 angle of inclination
maximum angle to the horizontal in which the steps, the pallets or the belt move
2.2 balustrade
part of the escalator/moving walk which ensures the user's safety by providing stability,
protecting from
moving parts and supporting the handrail
2.3 brake load
load on the step/pallet/belt which the brake system is designed to stop the escalator/moving
walk
2.4 comb
pronged section at each landing that meshes with the grooves
2.5 comb plate
platform at each landing to which the combs are attached
2.6 escalator
power-driven, inclined, continuous moving stairway used for raising or lowering persons in
which the user
carrying surface (e.g. steps) remains horizontal

2.7 handrail
power-driven moving rail for persons to grip while using the escalator or moving walk
2.8 interior panel
panel located between the skirting or lower inner decking and the handrail guidance profile or
balustrade
decking
2.9 machinery
escalator or moving walk machine(s) mechanisms and associated equipment
2.10 moving walk
power-driven installation for the conveyance of persons in which the user carrying surface
remains parallel to
its direction of motion and is uninterrupted (e.g. pallets, belt)

end of the balustrade

2.12 nominal speed


speed in the direction of the moving steps, pallets or the belt, when operating the equipment
under no load condition (i.e. without persons), stated by the manufacturer as that for which the
escalator or moving walk has
been designed
2.13 rated load
load which the equipment is designed to move
2.14 rise
vertical distance between the upper and lower finished floor levels
2.15 safety circuit
part of the electric safety system consisting of electrical safety devices
2.16 skirting
vertical part of the balustrade interfacing with the steps, pallets or belt
2.17 skirt deflector
device to minimise the risk of trapping between the step and the skirting

3.0 Scope of Work


A thorough examination of equipment shall be carried out as per BS EN 115-1-2017

4.0 Pre-Examination
4.1 Receive the job/ work order for the job having details of equipment and contact person.
4.2 Coordinate with site management, discuss and agree the program of work to be carried. Effective
line of communication with site staff attending the thorough examination.
4.3 Equipment manual, maintenance log book record and previous certificate if any, must be required
for technical verification
4.4 Valid certificate of operator and lifting gears to be used during testing is also required /verified.
4.5 Checklist and Test procedure should be at hand prior to commencing activity.

5.0 Site Risk Assessment
5.1 Barricade to isolate the test area and warning signage shall be posted.
5.2 Before performing a test, install safety fences at both ends of the Escalator/Moving
Walks.
5.3 Check possible obstructions that restrict the crane to be thoroughly tested over its working
area.

6.0 Thorough Examination

6.1 Electrical Test


 Check power supply
 Check grounding and insulation test.
 Check continuity.

6.2 Main Switch


 Check main switch power rating.
 This switch shall be capable of interrupting the highest current involved in normal condition of
use of the ESCALATOR/MOVING WALKS.
 This switch shall not cut the circuit feeding.
o Balustrade lighting;
o Comb lights;
o Skirt lighting;
o Alarm device; and
o Socket out let and electrical lighting in the drive station/machine room.

6.3 Electrical Safety Circuit


 Failure analysis and electric safety device
 Absence of a voltage;
 Voltage drop;
 Loss of continuity of a conductor;
 Fault to earth of a circuit;
 Short circuit or open circuit, change of value in an electric component such as resistor,
capacitor, transistor and lamps;
 Non attraction or incomplete attraction of the moving armature of a contactor or relay;
 Non separation of the moving armature of a contactor or relay;
 Non opening of a contact;
 Non closing of a contact; and
 Phase reversal.

6.4 Upper And Lower End.


 Check signals and warning signs
 Check the mandatory warning sign and prohibition signs;
 Special indicator for ESCALATOR/MOVING WALKS starting automatically;
 Check the traffic sign;
 Information for EMERGENCY situation ( use of hand winding device );
 Marking of NAME, YEAR, SERIAL NUMBER, and REFERENCE NUMBER indicated visible
from outside; and
 Check the indication lights.
 Check the indication lights
 Check the comb lights;
 Check the traffic lights;
 Check the skirt lights;
 Check the balustrade lights; and
 Check demarcation lights.

 Check the condition of inspection/ floor plate and the function of safety switch.
 Check the function of photocell.
 Check the Emergency Stop switch.
 Check the ride comfort.

6.5 Balustrade Deck And Skirts.


 Check the balustrade height ( 900mm to 1100mm)
 Check the clearance between balustrade deck and wall
 Check the landing barrier (height 100mm more than balustrade)
 Check the clear height above steps (not less than 2300mm)
 Check the adjacent Escalator hand rail distance (not less than 160mm)
 Check the head guards.
 Check anti misuse devices: (5.10)
o Anti-climbing (should be be installed at a point 1000 ± 50 mm above the floor level)
o Access Restriction Devices (shall be provided when the distance between the
balustrade decking to wall / combined balustrade decking width exceeds 125 mm)
o Anti-sliding devices (shall be provided when the distance between wall and handrail is
>300 mm). height of anti-slides shall not be less than 20mm.
o Vertical Deflector (shall be provided to prevent injuries from building obstacles. It must
not less than 300 mm in height and not presenting any sharp cutting edges) (A.2.4)
 Check the condition of skirt panels
 Check the condition of skirting deflector.
 Check for missing, damaged or loose screws.
 Check the skirt safety switches.

 Turn on the supply;
 Put a screw driver between skirts and switch actuator; and
 Try to run the ESCALATOR in both directions on inspection.
 Check the step to skirt gap (not exceed more than 4mm one side and 7mm in total on both
sides.)
 Check the materials or the type of lining underneath the deflector device in order to achieve a
coefficient of friction for leather (wet and dry), PVC (dry) and rubber (dry) less than 0.45.
Documents should be verified. (5.5.3.4)
 Check the condition of glass panels
 Check the EMERGENCY STOP switches.

6.6 Braking System.


 Escalator/Moving walks shall have a braking system,
 The braking system shall operate automatically
 In the event of loss of the voltage supply; and
 In the event of loss of the voltage supply to the control circuit.
 Check the stopping distance for the Escalator/Moving walks.

Stopping distance test procedure.

 Mark the step and skirt with a tape;


 Run the Escalator 2-3 turns;
 STOP when the marked point on the step and skirt are aligned;
 Measure the distance between the two marks.
Note: Stopping distance measurement must be reflected to the report for reference

 Check the Excess speed Equipment (escalator stop automatically when speed exceed 1.2
times of the nominal speed)
 Check the auxiliary braking Mechanism. It shall operate in the ff condition : (5.4.2.2)
 Auxiliary brake operates before the speed exceed 1.4 times of nominal speed
 By the time the steps and pallets or the belt change from the present direction of motion.

6.7 Hand Rail System


 Check the handrail profiles and their guides.
o Pinch points, trapping, cuts, cracks, etc
 Check the condition and functions of Hand rail inlet switch.
o Hand rail inlet switch test procedure.
 Run the escalator.
 Hand rail inlet switch ON by using screw driver when handrail is
 Running outward from the switch.
 Escalator must stop when switch pushed.
 Check the handrail speed. (Step speed with a tolerance of -0% to +2%) (5.6.1)
 Check the handrail speed monitoring device. (Stop the escalator if handrail speed. Deviation of
more than -15% to the actual speed for more than 15s) (5.6.1)
 Check the function of broken handrail device.
 Check the condition of handrail drive chain tension device and function of safety Switch.

6.8 Comb Plate


 Check the condition of comb segment.
 Check comb switch function (vertical or horizontal)
o Comb switch testing procedure.
 Turn off main power.
 Remove one comb segment.
 Use similar tools to move the comb plate for horizontal check.
 for vertical check use screwdriver or wedges to lift up the comb plate.
 Turn on the main and try to run the Escalator with inspection mode.
 Check the gap between steps to comb (shall not exceed 4mm.)

6.9 Steps/Belts/Pallet
 Check the condition of all the steps/Pallet.
 Check the horizontal step to step gap (not exceed 6mm)
 Check the condition of demarcation cleats.
 Check the condition of step chain tension device and function of safety switches.
 Check the condition and function of step up thrust safety switch.
 Check the function of step to skirt obstruction safety device.
 Check the condition and function of step sag switch.

 Check the condition and function of step missing sensor.
o Step missing sensor test procedure.
 Turn off the main.
 Remove one step.
 Turn on the main and Run the Escalator.
 Escalator should stop when the hole in the step band passes the missing Step
Sensor.

6.10 Machinery
 Check the machine room fire alarm system.
 Check the warning signs.
 Check the STOP switches.
 Check the protection guards for moving and rotating equipment.
 Check the condition of chain/belts
 Check the conditions or gear, gear wheels and sprocket.
 Check the condition of motor shaft.
 Check the condition of speed Governor.
 Check the function of hand winding device by manually releasing of brake.
Note: If a hand winding device is provided, operating instructions for use shall be
available in the vicinity. The direction of travel of the escalator or moving walk shall be indicated
clearly
 Check the step and pallet reversal in drive station.
 Check the electrical lighting and socket out let.
 Check the lighting intensity (at least 200 lux)
 Check all switching position marking.

6.11 Electric Installation.


 Check independent power for machinery, heating system and lighting.
 Main switch shall be capable of being locked or secured in the isolated position.
 Check the control panel wiring (gland, ferrules)
 Check the warning signs.
 Check the protection against electrical fault (ELCB)
 After each stop restarting shall be possible only after failure lock has been manually Reset.
 Check the inspection control equipment.
o Switching position marked clearly.
o Be a safety switch.
o Require manual RESET.

7.0 Reporting
The written reports shall contain the following information as a minimum:

8.0 DEFECTIVE EQUIPMENT

If the test is not satisfactory, a responsible representative of the user shall be informed by means of
engineering report. If the test Engineer considers the defect is dangerous in nature, then arrangements
must be made by installing a warning sign “out of order” to ensure that the equipment is not used until
remedial work has been carried out.
