characterized by domination, , discrimination and
division. She must have become aware of the
differences of culture as well as the influence and

principles in life. In her humility and simplicity, she
responded to God's call in faith, courage and

an existing community showed that it was farthest
from her mind to lead and open a path that others
had not attempted. Her hidden service and humility
manifested that it was not her desire to be in the

« Although she was not Spanish in ancestry and
fatherland, the Spanish civil and ecclesiastical
officials ragarded her demise as a great loss to the
Christian Philippines. These officials rendered her
high honors by attending her funeral rites and
acting as pallbearers of her coffin - “honors
reserved only for persons of distinctions.” (Zaide

the 18 century Spanish Philippines can well
imagine the lack of understanding, the criticism,
the frustrations, the oppositions she met in her
effort to make Christ's message more effective in

‘own quiet and humble way challenging the unjust
structures of that society, marked as it was by
unjust prejudices against the native Filipinos by bias

Mother Ignacia is a prophet of her time since she
received the call when she underwent the retreat and was
inspired by the Holy Spirit. Though promised by her parents
fo marriage, Mother Ignacia followed what she believed
God's plan for her life - that is to serve her Divine Majesty
by the sweat of her brow. She injured all the hardships and
summoned all her courage and faith in God to go against
the culture of her time which was dominated by racial
prejudice and social injustice. As @ prophet, she proclaimed
in her life what Jesus taught her in her deep communion
through prayer and humble service with the oppressed,
discriminated and despised by society. She stood for what
is right and disposed her fully without reserve to Jesus
whom she considered her beloved Spouse. She made
flesh what Jesus worked for when he was still physically
present in this world. She welcomed all people in all walks
of life in her Beaterio, she educated poor children, gave
retreat to the recogidas and put priority to others’ needs.
Though Mother Ignacia is not physically present now,

In her present beatas who worked for the different
ministries namely, education, retreat, care for the elderly,
social ministry, dormitory and special ministry.
Mother Ignacia is a true prophet addressing a certain
need of her time based on the special call from God.
M, Ignacia lived in a society that is full of division,
domination and discrimination. She witnessed how culture
differs and how wealth and power interplay. This was not
her dreamed society. She dreamed a society of equality,
full of love and patterned in the values lived by Jesus as
she was inspired by the Holy Spirit, By the same Holy
Spirit, Mother Ignacia courageously and faithfully
responded to Jesus’ call - to stand for the truth and follow
Jesus’ commandment: :Love one another as | have loved
you (Jn 15:11-12). This is the true mark of a true prophet.
Love and faith to the One who called without reserve.
These values are indeed seen in the life of Mother Ignacia
and continue up to the present.
The prophetic leadership of Mother Ignacia was shown
in the following instances:
1) She left home and lived by the sweat of her brow
and became an example that women can be
leaders and should not only be confined in the
house.
2) She formed a congregation of sisters who are
contemplative in action; this was in contrast to the
monastic way of life which was prevailing during
her time.
She gave retreats and catechisms to women and
children.
She accepted all women who wanted to join the
beaterio regardless of their race and status in life.

Becoming a Servant Leader:
Do You Have What It Takes?
Servant leadership is one of the most talked about yet least cttically examined
leadership philosophies. While many people closely identify with this leadership
approach, an equal number are cynical and question whether expectations of leadere
are realistic, This NebGuide provides an introduction to servant leadership, baced on
the works of Robert Greenleaf and Larry Spears, and focuses on the 11 characteristics
that identify a servant leader.

Calling

Servant leaders have a natural desire to serve others. This notion of having a calling to
serve is deeply rooted and value-hasad. Servant laaders have a desire to make a
differant for other nenpla and will pursue appartunitias tn impact others’ lives — never for
their own gain. A servant lsadar is willing to sacrifice salf-interests for the sake of others.
This characteristic cannot be taught, so unless a parson has a natural calling to serve,
servant leadership is not a realistic or compatible style.
Listening
Do people believe that you want to hear their ideas and will value them? Servant
leaders are excellent listeners. They are receptive and genuinely interested in the views
and input of others. People instinctively understand that servant leaders want them to
share their ideas and thal these ideas will be valued, Listening is a skill that can be
learned and Is essential for those who desire lo be a servant leader, Without good
listening skils, many of the other characteristics described in this publication carinol be
achieved,

Do people believe that you will understand what is happening in their lives and how it
affects them? Servant leaders can ‘walk in others’ shoes’. They understand and

earned confidence from others by understanding whatever situation is being faved. This
characteristic is a skill that comes more naturally to some people than others, but itis
pertinent for all who aspire to be a servant leader.
Healing
Do people come to you when the chips are down or when something traumatic has
happened in their lives? Servant leaders are people who others want to approach when
something traumatic has happened. They have developed a remarkable appreciation for
the emotional health and spirit of others. They are good at facilitating the healing
process and others gravitate toward them when emotional needs arise. The ability to
create an environment that encourages emotional mending is crucial for those who want
to become great servant leaders,
Awareness
Do others believe you have a strong awareness for what is going on? Servant leaders
have a keen sense of what is happening around them. They are always looking for cuss
from the environment to inform their opinions and decisions. They know what's going on
and will rarely be fooled by appearances, This skill is crucial to the development of
servant leaders.
Persuasion
Do others follow your requests because they want to or hecauisa thay believe they ‘have
to"? Servant leaders seek to convince others to do things ratheF'than relying on formal
authority. They are naturally very persuasive and offer compelling reasons when they
make requests. They never force others to do things. This ability is Important for servant
leaders to develop
Conceptualization
Do others communicate their ideas and vision for the organization when you are
around? Gervent leaders nurture the ability to conceptualize the world, events, and
possibiliies. They encourage others fo dream great dreams and avoid getting bogged

encourages thinking big and valuing the creative process. Those who want to be great
servant leaders must develop an environment that fosters conceptualization.
Foresight

Servant leaders have an uncanny ability to anticipate future events, This is not to say
they are psychic or always right, but they are adept at picking up patterns in the
environment and seeing what the future will bring. They usually anticipate
consequences of decisions with great accuracy. Those who want to be successful
servant leaders need to have and develop this foresight.
‘Stewardship
Do others believe you are preparing the organization to make a positive difference in the
world? Servant leaders are often characterized by a strong sonee of stewardship.
Stewardship stems from mediaval times when a ‘steward’ would be aseigned to hone
the ckille and development of the young prince — to prepare him for hic reign. The
kingdom relied on the eteward to teach and hold the prince in trust eo that ho would be
sucveseful king. Today the torm stowardship involves many of the samo things. A
ateward in an organization is responsible for preparing it for its destiny, usually for the
betterment of socioty. When we describe @ leader as having @ strong sense of
stewardship, we refer to a desire to prepare the organization to contribute to the greater
good of society - not unlike preparing the prince to serve the greater good of the
kingdom. Making a positive difference in the future is characteristic of the stewardship
mentality. Those who desire to be excellent servant leaders need to have a natural
sense of stewardship. If you don't naturally have a stewardship perspective, it is unlikely

Growth
Do people believe that you are committed to helping them develop and grow? Servant
leaders have a strong commitment to the growth of people, They believe that all people
have something to offer beyond their tangible contributions. Servant leaders work hard
to help people in a number of ways ~ spiritually, professionally, personally. Those who
want to be great servant leaders need to connect to others’ detielopmental needs and
actively find ways to meet these needs.

Building Community

leaders have a strong sense of community spirit and work hard to foster it in an

be great sarvant leaders need to work hard to build community in the organization.
Servant Leadership Development
Servant leadership is characterized by a belief that leaderchip development is an on-
going, life-long leaming process, For this roacon, servant leadere commit fo continual
development in the 11 characteristics of servant leadership,
Some characterietios come more naturally to come people than to others, By their
nature, characteristics such as calling, empathy, healing, and stewardship are more
difficult to learn and develop than other servant leadership characteristics, These are
characteristics that leaders must already have to be successful servant leaders,
Characteristics such as listening, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight,
growth and building community are all leamable skills, so servant leaders can
continually develop these, We encourage you fo reflect and thoughtfully assess the
degree to which you have what it takee to be a corvant loader. If you are committed to
being the best servant leader that you can be, we urge you to continuously work to
develop these characteristics.

SESSION 1 REFERENCE FOR SYNTHESIS
MOTHER IGNACIA AND LEADERSHIP
Called to a vocation outside of married life, Mother Ignacia in the
process of discernment to follow Christ by serving God our Lord was empowered
by the Holy Spirit to respond to the needs of the times. Mother Ignacia followed
the indicators of an empowered woman for leadership. These are the
confidence to face life, the ability to make decision, the ability to change the
process in society and the ability to effect change.
Faced with a problem regarding the desire of her parents for her to get
married, Ignacia resolved it, through consultation and following the advice to
make a retreat that led to her decision to serve God by living by the sweat of her
brow. Hence, she left parents and everything except needle and pair of scissors
from home and adopted a lifestyle of prayer, penance and sacrifice. This act of
Mother Ignacia changed the process of society when Spanish and Chinese
mestizas (sangleyes) and yndias (native Filipino women) joined her to follow her
path of service through retreat for women, education and dormitory work as a
boarding school. Through her spiritual and transformative leadership, that
leadership is service and service is leadership, she made a difference in the
Church and society. Discriminated women had a place in society not only in the
home. Her house accommodated those interested to become Beatas, those
who wanted to stay in the Reateria as recagidas and children coming from the
underprivileged were offered education and trained in household chores in the
dormitory. Through her leadership by example, her Beatas were seen as
blossoming flowers of virtues and virginity, their work being supported by people
around them and women of all walks of life were being led to the Lord through
the retreat following the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola of the
Jesuits. Her bold initiative was seen as laudable to the City and her response to
the needs of the Church as relevant, responsive and éffective to men and
women and children alike. Her call and response addressed the needs of the
family effecting change; namely, for women to collaborate with men in the
growth and development of society and children especially the poor be given

Opportunities to study and be educated in reading, writing and arithmetic and be
taught household chores.
Ferraris saw the impact of her leadership on the community and the
wider community. She writes:
Under the leadership of Mother Ignacia the community
lived in what the Spanish biographer called ‘total poverty,”
scrounging the streets for bits of wood for fuel, and begging for
some salf from the Jesuit community to season their rice, For
scarcity of oil, they would eat at the roofless kitchen extension
(batalan) by the light of the moon, using banana leaves in place of
plates because of their poverty. Meanwhile, their leader exhorted
the members to “bear with constancy their hardships and poverty,
and encouraged them to the practice of penance in order fo
“move God to have compassion upon them." The foundress
herself exemplified her exhortation with penitential acts such as
‘one reads described in the lives of ascetics: canying a heavy
cross on her shoulders, or putting on the yoke and have the
others drag her around the house, and praying with arms
outstretched in the form of a cross under the heat of the noonday
sun. The others imitated her, and everyone took the discipline,
slept very little but spent most of the night in prayer.
The edifying impact of the life lived in the Beaterio was
such that many benefactors gave them material support. When
the Beatas went to the distant town of Pampanga to solicit alms,
such was the generous response of the people that two bancs
were filled with donations. Through these alms and the earings
from sewing, the beatas were able (to enlarge the house to
accommodate the great number. “Such was the fragrance that
their lives, prayer and piety permeated the city that Spaniards,
mestizos as well as natives responded with generosity to their

Comparing Mother Ignacia with other leaders, Alvino has this to
say:
Unlike other leader, Mother Ignacia sold no idea or
pressured no one to follow her doctrines and principles in life. In
her humility and simplicity, she responded to God's call in faith,
courage and generosity without any intention of attracting
followers. The fact that she initially planned to join an existing
community showed that it was farthest from her mind to lead and
open a path that others had not altempted. Her hidden service
and humility manifested that it was not her desire to be in the
limelight. The apex of this was she gave up the superiorship
when she saw that others could take it Hence, she voluntarily
relinquished a right and privilege that could have been hers. Her
main preoccupation was fo give herself to God as contemplative
in action according to the needs of the Church by living a chaste,
poor and obedient life. Yet this very obscurity became the light
that illumined others and freed them from their complacency,
lethargy and laxity.
To the pious, she became a sign to become fervent; and
in the complacent she awakened generosity and initiative. She
jolted the lukewarm and lazy by her spirit of industry and she
disturbed the conscience of others to return to God by her life of
contemplation in action To the Filipino people she gave hope
and inspiration. She set an example of how to integrate
education and culture, faith and life. To the Spaniards she
became a sign of reconciliation where the aspirations and needs
of both races were attended fo in her apostolate without making
either party guilty of neglect or failure in the process. (Alvino,
1981)

Writing a biography of Mother Ignacia, Fr Bello saw rare qualities of
leadership in her.MODULE /-MOTHER IGNACIA AND LEADERSHIP THIRD YEAR COLLEGE
Mother Ignacia was an energetic woman of rare qualities
of leadership; hers was an inspiring personality with a generous
dose of common sense in dealing with people; her example was
her main asset in attracting other women fo follow her way of life
which was one of abnegation and sacrifice. If she had not
possessed all these qualities her spiritual advisers and directors
would have from the beginning discouraged her from starting this
retreat apostolate and from accepting other women to follow her.
(Ballo, 1958).
Her empowered leadership was also unique because of the bold

PRAYER FOR THE BEATIFICATION OF
VENERABLE IGNACIA DEL ESPIRITU SANTO
Father in heaven, Your name is glorified over all the earth in Your saints,
men and women, distinguished by their wholehearted service and love for You.
Through them You have established religious congregation in Your Church. In
Your goodness and mercy, You have looked with favor on Your people in the
Philippines and have chosen from among them Your lowly handmaid, IGNACIA
DEL ESPIRITU SANTO to be the foundress of a religious family under the
special protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We humbly ask You to then to
glorify Your name in her by performing the miracles needed for her beatification,
through Your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. (petition)
May her prayers and intercession obtain for us the favor we ask for,
