INTRODUCTION
The Ignacian Formation Program was originally conceived in the 16th
Ordinary General Chapter in 1996. This aims to provide a more solid
foundation on the spirituality of Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo which
is a “spirituality of Marian radical openness to the will of God that
impels us to a humble and courageous, generous and creative service to
the Church especially the poor.” It is the spirituality of the humble
servant of the Lord (CD 1996,5).
The original Ignacian Formation Program (IFP) Modules were first
implemented in 1997 for the youth and Lay Partners; and in 2008 for
Grade School, High School and College. These modules were revised as
mandated by the 20th Ordinary General Chapter. (Documents CD 2016,
p.35, 1.3). The revision was to align the modules to the current social
context of our students and personnel, to enable them to uphold their
personal integrity rooted in Christian morality and discipleship, and to
exercise their strong sense of accountability at the level of their
responsibility following the examples of Venerable Ignacia del Espiritu
Santo.
This current year 2021, the Education Ministry Commission implements
the revised IFP Modules 2021 for Grade 3 to Grade 12 and for
Personnel. The topics and contents of this revised IFP Modules 2021 are
based from the original IFP Modules of 1997 and most of its contents
were copied/lifted from the book entitled “Mother Ignacia del Espiritu
Santo, A Lamp to Our Path” by S. Ma. Anicia B. Co, RVM; and some were
taken from “Behold the Handmaid of the Lord!” by S. Ma. Rita Ferraris,
RVM; “A Valiant Woman: Thoughts and Reflections on the Legacy of
Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo”; Novena Prayer to Mother Ignacia del
Espiritu; and from other RVM Documents.
The IFP Modules 2021 for students (Grades 3 to 12) are designed as a
series of ten modules with four (4) sessions to be given by year level.
The time frame for each session is one (1) hour, however if the school
allows, the facilitator may extend the time to have more activities,
reflection and faith sharing. The modules focus on the family
background, vocation, mission, qualities, virtues and values of Mother
Ignacia and its relevance to the present reality in our society and
concerns of our students.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES (What to know and what to do)
Enabling Objectives: At the end of the session, the pupils will
know and learn the missionary qualities of Mother
Ignacia and identify the characteristics of Mother
Ignacia in her person as a missionary.
Terminal Objectives (Goal): At the end of the session, the
pupils will participate in the missionary activities of
the Parish Church following the example of Mother
Ignacia.
NEW KNOWLEDGE (facts, primary and broadened concept)
A. Concept
Mother Ignacia’s missionary spirit began in her baptism.
She lived out her baptismal call as king by managing the
concerns of her beaterio with hard work (they gather
sticks for cooking, accepts sewing works, they eat under
the moonlight...) and dedication. She lived out her
baptismal call as prophet of her time by speaking what is
IFP SY 2021 - Module 4: Mother Ignacia and Her Mission - Page 6
true – that women has a voice in changing the society.
She lived out her baptismal call as a priest by bringing the
beatas to be in union with God through prayer and
receiving the sacraments.
Her personal relationship with God led her to take
courage when:
she dared to accept native women in a time when
only Spanish women can become Sisters;
she did acts of charity outside of the beaterio and
not just stay inside the beaterio as it used to be
during her time;
she and her beatas did not depend on support
coming from authorities as what the Spanish
convents do.
She was very passionate in bringing others close to God:
by assisting the Jesuit Fathers in giving retreats (thus
she is the first woman in the world to be involved in
retreat work);
by accepting Yndia, mestizas and Spanish to be
taught in reading, writing, skills and of things about
God.
B. Broadened Concept:
How can the missionary spirit and actions of Mother
Ignacia be replicated in our society today?
ACTIVITIES: Show n’ Tell
The pupils will be shown different pictures displaying the
missionary activities of Mother Ignacia and they identify
her characteristics that can be observed in the pictures.

CHARITY-INSPIRED CHARACTER-BUILDING VALUES
Values Integration: Faith and Service -Strong Faith in God,
Prayerfulness and Compassion; Charity
1. As baptized Christians, how will your personal
relationship with God be lived out as missionaries like
Mother Ignacia?
Our personal relationship with God will be lived out
by becoming:
o more accepting of others, especially those who are
shy and have no friends; (charity)
o more responsible to do our work in the classroom
and at home without being told; (integrity)
o more passionate in bringing others close to God;
(strong faith in God)
o more prayerful for those in need: the jobless, the
victims of bullying, the homeless refugees... and
the like; (prayerfulness and compassion)
o more attentive in the celebration of the Mass
every Sunday and invite our family and friends to
also join. (strong faith in God)
Social Integration: Reducing Inequalities (No. 17 of the 17
UN Sustainable Goals)
1. Whom are we going to help?
2. How would you help those who do not express that
they are in need?
We help not only our friends and family but we
help also the least, the last and the lost of our
society and those whom we do not know and are
shy to ask for help.
INVITATION TO SILENCE… GOD TIME
Faith Reflection/Faith Sharing
Which among the missionary characteristics of Mother
Ignacia are present in me? And what are those that I find
IFP SY 2021 - Module 4: Mother Ignacia and Her Mission - Page 8
lacking? What is then the challenge of this for me as an
Ignacian Marian?
APHORISM (Summary /Synthesis)
As baptized like Mother Ignacia, what does it mean to be
a missionary of today’s time?
As baptized, like Mother Ignacia, we are sent to love God
and our neighbor as ourselves in our participation of the
on-going life of the Church, in our life of faith and prayer
and service to others. This is the reason why each one of
us has to fulfill our duty because we are humans who are
capable of loving. In loving, we show our being
missionaries like Mother Ignacia whose entire missionary
life revolves around the virtue of love. For without love,
there can be no mission.
With this is a reminder to never be afraid. Everyone is in
mission on this earth. We must respond to those who are
waiting for our help, for God desires that we bring his
light, love, his justice and mercy to everyone we meet
and in the situation we are in. In that way, we become,
like Mother Ignacia, a missionary of and with love in
today’s time.
NOTEWORHTY APPLICATION OF INSIGHTS GAINED
As a missionary today, I need to be aware of my
neighbor’s cry for help and see how I can respond in the
spirit of Christ’s love the way Mother Ignacia did:

IN FULFILLING HER MISSION
Motivation:
Directions: The teacher will prepare a glass pitcher filled with
plain water. The teacher will pour a sachet of powdered
orange juice and stir the contents to spread the color
evenly. The class will distinguish the difference of a
pitcher of water to the moment when a powdered juice
will be poured in.
What did you observe? How did the pitcher look like
before the orange juice was poured in? How did it look
after?

change or have made a difference?
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES (What to know and what to do)
Enabling Objectives: At the end of the session the Grade Six
pupils will be able to know and learn the extent of
Mother Ignacia’s witnessing and show ways on how
to imitate her.
Terminal Objectives (Goal): At the end of the session the
Grade Six pupils will be able to witness Mother
Ignacia’s missionary life through their daily encounter
with people in the community.
NEW KNOWLEDGE (facts, primary and broadened concept)
C. Concept
Yndia – a name used during the Spanish times
referring to a native Filipina
Beata – a woman of prayer, devoted her life in God’s
service
Beaterio – the house where the beatas stay
Recogida – a woman who stays in the beaterio for board
and lodging
Retreat – days of prayer and silence, focused only to
God’s presence in one’s life
What are the works and traits of Mother Ignacia that
caused change in the society?
By her transforming presence, Mother Ignacia has
influenced the society in all levels: the rich and influential
(Fr. Murillo Velarde, the Jesuit historian were one of
those), the native people (where she helped and
influenced the religious awareness in the local place), the
children (to whom catechism, sewing and embroidery,
reading and writing were taught), the young ladies (to
IFP SY 2021 - Module 4: Mother Ignacia and Her Mission - Page 11
whom she witnessed that a life of service is a choice and
that they, too, can be a beata); the mothers and wives
(whom she served when they came as retreatants or as a
recogida), the church (Archbishop Martinez was
impressed by the beatas and gave a recommendation in
their behalf to the Spanish King), the government (to the
point that some officials helped in carrying her coffin
during her burial), and the Spanish colonizers (Governor
General Marques de Obando gave a recommendation
also that led for the King of Spain, Ferdinand VI, to finally
grant the beaterio the government approval that they
needed).
Her witnessing was felt in education, retreat, household
management, the church and the political situation of the
time where women were seen as second class citizens
and that the yndias were considered as no good.
D. Broadened Concept:
1. What changes in the society and in the church did
Mother Ignacia introduce?
2. What difference did the presence of Mother Ignacia
made in the Philippines and in the world?
ACTIVITIES:
HUMAN PYRAMID
Mechanics:
1. Ask for 3 volunteer pupils to stand in front.
2. They will be tasked to form a human pyramid.
Questions:
Would there be a human pyramid if there were only
two people?
What importance does each of the participant play in
making a human pyramid?

CHARITY-INSPIRED CHARACTER-BUILDING VALUES
Values Integration: Faith and Service/ Courage
o What did Mother Ignacia do to raise the concerns of the
“least, the last and the lost” of her time?
Her courage to serve those in need, an act of leadership
in a time when women are considered second-class
citizens.
o What made her come up with big decisions in her life?
Her strong faith in God when she went out of the culture
of her time, became a woman of prayer in a time when
women were expected to marry and served the needy
when women of God were then expected to stay within
the walls of the convents.
Social Integration:
o How would you act when you see someone being bullied
(actual or in social media)?
o How faithful are you in fulfilling your Sunday obligation to
go to church? In helping your classmates in some school
tasks? In obeying your parents to run some errands? In
helping make the school/the church/the house/the
barangay clean?
o How would you relate with those who are of different
religion? Of different sexual orientation? Of persons with
disability? Of children of persons denied with liberty (PDL
or prison inmates)?

INVITATION TO SILENCE… GOD TIME
Faith Reflection/Faith Sharing: Recall the times when you did
something good (in school, at home, at church, in the
sitio/barangay, with friends, in social media...)
How did you feel then? How did the person feel when
you helped?
APHORISM (Summary /Synthesis)
Each of us has something to contribute to make this world a
better place to live in, and even in the specific place we are
in. Each one has the power and the capacity to influence and
spread goodness. Jesus himself demonstrated this. He was
the inspiration of Mother Ignacia when she did the same.
Whenever we respond to the situation where help is needed,
it is an occasion to practice our call as missionary. This act
was what Mother Ignacia has done in order for us to follow.
It’s how she lived then, that is still how we are called to live it
out now -- -as missionaries of today.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES (What to know and what to do)
Enabling Objectives: At the end of the session, the pupils are
able to know the influence of Mother Ignacia to the
people of her time and to the society and determine
how they can continue Mother Ignacia’s missionary
legacy today.
Terminal Objectives (Goal): At the end of the session, the
pupils will promote the legacies of Mother Ignacia in
the Church and society by their active involvement in
the ministries of the Church as missionaries.
NEW KNOWLEDGE (facts, primary and broadened concept)
A. Concept
Mother Ignacia’s life exemplifies how it is to be a real
missionary. Her entire life was devoted to prayer,
community and service of her Divine Majesty. It was in
this reason that the moment she died, people revered
her including the Spanish government
The direct legacies of Mother Ignacia were the Beatas
whom we now call as the Religious of the Virgin Mary
(RVM) Sisters, the Beaterio and the 1726 Rules and
Constitutions. Mother Ignacia, through her death,
challenged the Beatas to live a life of prayer, penance and
service.
The following are other legacies of Mother Ignacia as
follows:
o Her person – Mother Ignacia is a gift to the Church as
she is a woman of patience, perseverance, courage
and humility;
o Her presence – Mother Ignacia became the image of
an empowered Filipina who will shed light on the
realities of the society during her time especially
towards women specifically Filipina Yndias. Her
IFP SY 2021 - Module 4: Mother Ignacia and Her Mission - Page 16
presence brought joy to the community. Thus, they
are empowered not to give up and surrender.
o Her spirituality – The kind of life Mother Ignacia lived
is worthy of imitation. She lived a life of humble
service thereby acknowledging the presence of God
in all things. Her spirituality of humble servanthood
helped the Beatas in their service to the Divine
Majesty.
o Her leadership – As the foundress of the Beaterio,
Mother Ignacia showed a different kind of leadership
that was patterned after that of Jesus, the Greatest
Leader. Servant leadership allowed Mother Ignacia to
inspire other Beatas in following Jesus in His humility
and simplicity. The Beatas have demonstrated how
Mother Ignacia guided them through thick and thin
and the difficulties in life.
o Her virtues – She is a woman of holiness. She lived
her life in imitation of Jesus Christ. Her virtues
allowed the ministries of the Beatas to prosper and
helped a lot of people to become persons of virtue as
well.
B. Broadened Concept:
With all these, no wonder that Mother Ignacia is indeed a
woman of great life and personality. Her legacy helped in
re-shaping the society especially on how the Yndias
should be dealt with.
Guide Questions:
1. What is the challenge of the legacies of Mother
Ignacia to you as a pupil?
2. How did Mother Ignacia and the beatas live their life
despite the hardships they met?
IFP SY 2021 - Module 4: Mother Ignacia and Her Mission - Page 17
ACTIVITIES:
In this activity, the pupils will be grouped into 6 members
each and will pick a corresponding box. In the box are cut-out
pictures containing the different ministries and words of
Mother Ignacia during her time. The group members should
be able to arrange the cut pictures and explain to the class
the picture.
CHARITY-INSPIRED CHARACTER-BUILDING VALUES
Values Integration:
1. As a son/daughter, pupil and member of the Parish Church
and community, what do you think will be your own
legacy?
As a son/daughter, pupil and member of the
community, our legacy can be portrayed by:
o being honest in everything that we do especially
when we are given a task to do by our parents and
teachers; (honesty)
o not cheating during exams as this will not do good
to us; (integrity and justice)
o sharing my time in helping our classmates, teachers
and friends in times of need and difficulty; (charity)
o extending our hands in the community outreach
program of the school and in our community;
(prophetic witness to Gospel values and
nationalism)
o encouraging our classmates to become good
students through the good examples we will be
showing; (prophetic witness to Gospel values)
o volunteering in the ministries and works in the
Church as an altar server and others; (charity)
IFP SY 2021 - Module 4: Mother Ignacia and Her Mission - Page 18
Social Integration:
1. What is the role of women in our society?
2. Why are the women during the time of Mother Ignacia
not treated well?
3. Do you still see this reality against women happening
now?
4. What have you done, in your own little ways, in giving
importance towards women?
The women during Mother Ignacia’s time were not
treated well due to the fact that native Filipinas before
were quoted as “yndias”. Thus, no native Filipina was
given significance because our society then thought that
women are only reserved to be doing household chores
and to serve their husbands. This reality before is still
happening in the present time. Women are still
discriminated, abused, maltreated and even abandoned
as the society marked them to be “weak”. That is why
Mother Ignacia during her time was very focused on
breaking misconceptions and wrong ideas about women
especially native yndias. Her works of bringing women
into the society’s core made a lasting legacy at present in
the Philippines. The challenge now to us is to continue
what Mother Ignacia has started in making sure that her
legacy continues in order to bring about positive
contributions to our society. Thus, making Mother
Ignacia’s legacy last until the end of time.
INVITATION TO SILENCE… GOD TIME
Faith Reflection/Faith Sharing
How can the legacy of Mother Ignacia be continued in your
own respective families? What will be your steps in making
sure that Mother Ignacia’s legacy is shown in your life as a
pupil?
IFP SY 2021 - Module 4: Mother Ignacia and Her Mission - Page 19
APHORISM (Summary /Synthesis)
What special missionary characteristics of Mother Ignacia
enabled her to continue the mission given to her by God
which will then become part of her legacy?
The life of Mother Ignacia is indeed a legacy to the
society. In her years here on earth, she was not only
prayerful and obedient but she was also very courageous
and valiant. This is a clear manifestation that Mother
Ignacia’s legacy made a mark in the society. Her legacies
empowered the Beatas to continue the mission of Christ
through the services rendered to the Church and society.
The legacy of Mother Ignacia inspired the Beatas in their
prayer, community and social life as it pave the way for
continuing service of His Divine Majesty. Truly, this
valiant woman from Binondo is worthy of our emulation
and surely her legacy will last ‘till the end of age.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES (What to know and what to do)
Enabling Objectives: At the end of the session, the pupils will

Terminal Objectives (Goal): At the end of the session, the
pupils will carry on the missionary influences of
Mother Ignacia by their prayer life and in rendering
voluntary services in the different situations in their
daily life at home, in school and in the community.
NEW KNOWLEDGE (facts, primary and broadened concept)
A. Concept
Mother Ignacia’s mission is continued today not only
through the RVM Sisters but also through all of us who
belong to this one Ignacian Marian family. The RVM
IFP SY 2021 - Module 4: Mother Ignacia and Her Mission - Page 21
Sisters with the help of their lay partners are doing many
missions in the Church not only here in the Philippines
but also in other countries.
Education – serving Christ through the Catholic education
of the young
Retreat Ministry – assisting people to pray and to have
closer relationship with God.
Dormitory Ministry – providing a home away from home
Social Ministry – helping the less fortunate in their needs
Special Ministry – different services that the Sisters do in
the Church
Overseas Mission – presence of the RVM Sisters in other
countries doing different works.
The RVM Sisters have mission in: USA, Canada, Italy,
Ghana West Africa, Indonesia and Taiwan.
B. Broadened Concept:
Today, we, too, together with the RVM Sisters
participate, witness, promote and carry on Mother
Ignacia’s mission in society by imitating her:
Self-sacrifice during difficulties – Mother Ignacia endured
many difficult times but her faithfulness to the
crucified Jesus made her overcome her hardships and
made them as blessings.
Courage and hope – Mother Ignacia took the risk to do
her missions together with the beatas even though
she was not certain about it.
Humble service – Mother Ignacia served with humility.
She did not hold on to her position as rectora but
allowed other beatas to lead.
IFP SY 2021 - Module 4: Mother Ignacia and Her Mission - Page 22
Simple lifestyle – Mother Ignacia observed a frugal life.
When she left home to serve the Lord Jesus she only
brought a pair of scissors and needle to start a living.
Faithfulness and trust in God – Mother Ignacia’s
experiences of God’s love and close relationship with
Jesus made her prayer life stronger and kept her
faithful to her mission of educating young girls and
assisting the Jesuit priests in retreat work, especially
for women.
Concern for the good of persons – Mother Ignacia’s deep
concerns for the good of souls moved her and the
beatas to respond to the needs of those around
them, especially women and children.
Resourcefulness and creativity – Mother Ignacia used her
personal gifts and talents in the service of others. She
considered negative situations as moments for
experiencing God. The limited resources she had did
not hinder her to serve others but made use of what
is available.
These characteristics are necessary as we respond to
different situations in our daily life in our family, in the
school and in the community.

APHORISM (Summary /Synthesis)
Mother Ignacia in our life today means we keep alive her
missionary spirit to help us carry out our mission to bring the
light of Christ to others. Her mission moved us to do loving
acts to our neighbors and to all of creation. In imitating her,
we are one with the RVM Sisters together with their co-
workers, parents and alumni wherever we are and whatever
we are doing. Just like Mother Ignacia we become true
missionaries if we have deep prayer life and do loving acts to
others.
