Past Simple Tense Guide

The Past Simple Tense is used to describe actions that happened and finished in the past. It is formed by adding "ed" to regular verb infinitives and using the past form for irregular verbs. For regular verbs, "-ed" is added to the base verb. Negatives and questions are formed with the auxiliary verb "did". The "-ed" ending is pronounced as /d/, /t/, or /id/ depending on the final sound of the base verb. The Past Simple Tense expresses completed actions that occurred at specific times in the past, actions that happened repeatedly, or a chronological series of past events.

THE PAST SIMPLE TENSE

FORM
The Past Simple Tense is formed by adding ed to the infinitive base of regular verbs, but with irregular
verbs we use the 2nd column. (Past Simple se kod pravilnih glagola tvori dodavanjem ED na infinitivnu
osnovu za sva lica, a kod nepravilnih glagola koristimo drugu kolonu (Past Simple).

I worked
you worked
he, she, it worked

we worked
you worked
they worked

e.g. My sister gave me this book for my last birthday.

He worked for this company for 25 years.

Negatives and questions are formed the same way as in the Present Simple with the auxiliary verb to
do which is placed in the past and its form is did. ( Negacije i pitanja se tvore isto kao i kod Present
Simple-a sa pomoćnim glagolom TO DO, samo što naravno taj glagol stavljamo u prošlo vrijeme te
dobija oblik DID.) In negatives and questions the main verbs go back from their past tense forms into
infinities as the past is placed on the auxiliary verb did.

N: My sister did not (didn’t) give me this book for my last birthday.
He didn’t work for this company for 25 years.
Q: Did my sister give me this book for my last birthday?
Did he work for this company for 25 years?

SPELLING RULES
1.Ako se glagol zavrsava na e onda se na njega samo dodaje d umjesto ed.
e.g. love - loved
2. Pravilo o dupliranju zadnjih suglasnika (konsonanti) je isto i kao kod dodavanja –ing na glagole,
znači, ako se glagol sastoji od jednog sloga i u sebi ima jedan samoglasnik (vocal) i završava se jednom
konsonantom onda se ta konsonanta duplira prije dodavanja –ed.
e.g. admit – admitted, stop – stopped, travel – travelled

3. Glagoli koji se završavaju na y ispred kojih stoji konsonanta mijenjaju y u i prije dodavanja –ed.
e.g. carry – carried, try – tried, but play – played, obey – obeyed

Pronunciation of the – ed:

Nastavak – ed se izgovara na tri načina:
1. kao /d/ nakon zvučnih glasova /vokala, b, d, g, l, m, n, v, d3/
e.g. smiled, opened, loved
2. kao /t/ nakon bezvučnih glasova /f, k, ks, p, š, č/
e.g. cooked, escaped, laughed, watched
3. kao /id/ nakon /r, t, d/
e.g. needed, carried,

USAGE
The Past Simple Tense is used to describe actions that happened in the past and finished in the past.
(PST se koristi da opise radnje koje su se desile i zavrsile u proslosti).
We usually use the Past Simple Tense:

1. for actions that happened at a precise time in the past ( za prošle radnje kada je vrijeme tacno
dato). The time expressions that we use are: yesterday, 2 minutes /one hour/ five days/a month/
few years...ago (not before), in 1990, the other day, last....Friday/month/Tuesday/year....,

e.g. We had a wonderful party last Friday.

2. for actions in the past taking place once, never or several times

e.g. He visited his parents every weekend.

3. for actions in the past taking place one after the other i.e. for telling stories in chronological
order
e.g. He came in, took off his coat and sat down.

4. for action in the past taking place in the middle of another action

e.g. When I was having breakfast, the phone suddenly rang.

5. in if sentences type II (If I talked, …)

e.g. If I had a lot of money, I would share it with you.
