project undertaking is fine however the project assumes this is a new design which
shouldn’t be as there are a multitude of rovers being built.

We never assumed it to be a new design, we assumed it to be a new design based on Mars

Is one of the Under-grad students among the single digit number of teams from India to get
selected and participate in the Human Exploration Space Challenge. The Design Constraints
and The Tasks carried out by the teammates who drive the Vehicle are already pre-
constructed by NASA’S competition Guidelines.

Our present design is simply complying to the rules and regulations of NASA’s expectation.
Therefore in-order to import some innovative ideas as well as maintain the guidelines. We
have taken inspiration from many automobiles and bi-cycles and imported some of the
mechanism in our design.

Our design is the only design, for a four-wheel power drive system and four wheel steering
mechanism, with steering mechanisms such as, differential gear steering setup and the
traditional Ackerman steering set-up for both the pilots. In simple words, imagine a truck
with multi-axle and multi wheel steering, in a bicycle.

And to support the conditions of mars, we did include the Double wishbone system as our
suspension. This double wishbone system is a best choice for our rover challenge. It might be
a heavier suspension system but a good one, as it takes up less vertical space it prevents
camber changes over time. the negative camber can be done too for the wheel.

Last but not the least, in-order to make it lighter and stronger, we are choosing Aluminium
and Carbon-fibre reinforced Composite for our project. The cost might be high for
fabrication, but it will make our design one of the load bearing vehicles as we do consider the
mars conditions, and non-metals like carbon-fibre could not degrade easily.

We are using aluminium reinforced with the carbon fibre as, we would not want the risk of
Failure of breaking during testing, and main reason to cut the costs.

2. Consideration of Martian atmosphere is not done

The consideration for the Martial atmosphere is not done because the rover is only driven in
the simulated Martian terrains which are created in the earth atmosphere but to strengthen our
ORR report we are working on the dynamic analysis by using the Martian atmospheric
conditions.

Although the theoretical Conditions of Mars is done as per the operating conditions of the
past robotic rover’s operations on the surface of planet mars. Consideration of Planet mars’
condition can be done only if the live model is available. ( this will be explained elaborate in
the question of lab analysis). The simulation of vehicle as a mars exploration rover on mars
as well as earth, can be carried out at a computational scale, but the right resources is not
available for the students in Hindustan institute of technology and science.
3. Benchmarking and lab analysis : how will it be done?

report of the analysis files is found in appendix sections of the report produced before.

Part 2:

The lab analysis is already done for the rover, though it is not from our work, it is a collective
evidence from our literature review work done by our team. The actual lab analysis is the performance
during the competition, carried out.
Hove ever, the rover is calculated designed and tested at a computational level, there is limitation of
carrying out the experimental data as the timeline required for conducting sufficient experiments is
estimated to be around 6 months again, by which the competition time would cross.
In-case of an experimental demand, we would like to do a model for 1:10 sized model for our rover
and simulate it to different mars conditions on a scaled manner.

4. Software considerations are missing.

Software considered to be used for designing is

CATIA V5 2020, As the CATIA provides with various workbench such as , PART DESIGN
assembly design Welding workbench. For the precision designing of components of rover.

The CATIA is a best use for surfacing and sheet metalling too, which also makes fabricators
and drafters to access the files and 3-d models easily.

ANSYS WORKBENCH provides an easier interface for students to use it in analytical logics
of a structure or a fluid domain problem.

It is also easily available for students as a student version as well as a full version has a lot of
workbenches for the scientific tests carried out in a computational scale.
