Data Frame

NAMRIA-GTC/RDS
Data Frame
A container for layers. It organizes the data
 It provides a geographic “window,” or
map frame, in which you can display and
work with geographic information as a
series of map layers.
 It can have many data frames
- When a map has more than one data
frame, one of them is the active data frame
- Active data frame appears in bold font
on the Table of Contents.
NAMRIA-GTC/RDS
Layers
 Represents symbolized spatial data
 It can be vector dataset (Feature
layers): coverage, shapefiles, CAD
files, Geodatabase
 Does not store actual geographic
data
 Annotations and Dimensions
 Raster datasets
 Time datasets
 Set symbols, labels and other
properties
 Layers can be stored in map
documents (.mxd) or saved
individually as layer files (.lyr)
 Manipulate through context menu

NAMRIA-GTC/RDS
Maps
 Holds layers, data frames,
graphics and map elements
 Store information in a map
document (.mxd) file.
 When you open a map
document, ArcMap checks the
links to the data sources.
 If it cannot find the data, it
does not display, but the layer
is still in the data frame. A
small red exclamation mark (! )
will appears on the right of the
layer symbol.

NAMRIA-GTC/RDS
Table of Contents

 Lists all the data frames

and thematic layers on the
map
 The check box next to each
layer indicates whether its
display is currently turned
on or off.
 Drag layers up or down to
change the display
 You can copy and paste
layers within data frame or
into different data frame

NAMRIA-GTC/RDS
Moving Around the Map
 Zoom in or out
 Pan the display
 Full extents
 Back or forward one
display
 Zoom to layer
 Zoom to selected
features
 Select Feature
NAMRIA-GTC/RDS
Toolbars
 Working with toolbars
 Standard toolbar—map printing, saving
a map, starting related ArcGIS applications,
and so on
 Tools toolbar—map navigation and
query
 Layout toolbar—editing and managing
map layouts
 Editor toolbar—editing map features
 Draw toolbar—adding and editing map
graphics, text, and layout elements

Using a Bookmark
 Spatial Bookmarks identifies a particular
 geographic extent that you want to save or
refer to later.
 Set and name spatial extent
 Data frame specific
 Return to it at anytime

NAMRIA-GTC/RDS
Magnifier, Overview windows, Viewer

See more detail or overview

without changing displays
 Overview window-shows
the full extent of the data
 Magnifier window-works
like a magnifying glass
 Viewer window-works
similar to the magnifier
window, but it retains the
view when move it to the side.

Labeling Features
 Label features using attribute values
 Layer properties control appearance
and position
 Convert labels to annotation features

ArcGIS 3D Analyst Extension

The ArcGIS 3D Analyst extension provides tools for creating, visualizing,
and analyzing GIS data in a three-dimensional (3D) context.

View GIS data on a 3D globe using ArcGlobe.

View GIS data within a 3D
planimetric view using
ArcScene.

Build and maintain functional

surfaces, such as a terrain
dataset constructed from
lidar.

Query and analyze surfaces, such as slope and aspect.

NAMRIA-GTC/RDS
ArcGIS Spatial Analyst Extension
Provides a broad range of powerful
spatial modeling and analysis
capabilities.

 Create, query, map, and analyze

cell-based raster data;
 Perform integrated raster/vector
analysis;
 Derive new information from
existing data;
 Query information across multiple
data layers;
 Integrate cell-based raster data
with traditional vector data
sources.
