Character Disintegration Assessment
Directions for Writing:
The character disintegration of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth could be blamed on tragic flaws, like
excessive ambition or hubris. It could also be blamed on external forces, like peer pressure,
relationships, or the convincing words of others.
From the perspective of either Macbeth or Lady Macbeth, write an 8-10 sentence paragraph in
which you explain whether the cause of your character disintegration or downfall was due to
internal or external forces. Cite textual evidence from the play to support your character's
perspective and response. Your response will be written in first-person point of view.
As Lady Macbeth, I believe that the cause of my downfall was due to both
internal forces and external ones. My ambition and desire for power took
over me and ultimately led to my mental breakdown. In Act 1 Scene 5, I
explicitly state my desire to become queen and encourage Macbeth to act. I
constantly push him to commit murder and take the crown, even though it
goes against his nature. My internal conflict and the guilt of our actions
ultimately lead me to my downfall, as I cannot bear the weight of my sins.
In Act 1, Scene 5, I call upon the spirits to "unsex me here," asking to be
rid of my feminine traits so that I may better carry out my plans. This
Character Disintegration desperation to be rid of my “female” weakness and embrace a more
Response masculine identity is a clear indication of the external forces at play,
driving me towards my downfall. These actions were mostly caused by
myself, which ultimately led to my unraveling.
