7.01 Toolbox Assignmentcomplete

This document provides instructions for a two-part assignment on endothermic and exothermic reactions. Part 1 involves completing notes and vocabulary on key terms like temperature, thermal energy, heat, enthalpy, and potential energy diagrams. Students are to define these terms and answer related questions. Part 2 is an exit ticket quiz to assess understanding. Students are directed to save and upload their completed part 1 file for the assignment.

01 Endothermic and Exothermic Toolbox Assignment

Make a copy of this file. Complete, Save and Upload under your 7.01 Assignment in your
Educator Gradebook There are TWO parts to this assignment: (1) Key Notes and Vocabulary and
(2) Exit Ticket. Complete both parts for full credit.

Part 1: Key Notes and Vocabulary (10 points possible)

You will need to access the 7.01 Lesson in Educator or watch the live lesson recording to complete this part of
the assignment. Fill in the blank with key terms and answer all questions.
★ Thermal Energy and Heat (Extra Help Video)
1) Energy is released or absorbed during chemical reactions.
2) The energy of a system is described in terms of temperature, thermal energy, and heat.
Describe each of these factors below:
a) Temperature- A measure of average kinetic energy of particles in a sample of matter.

b) Thermal energy- measure of the total kinetic energy in a sample

c) Heat- transfer of thermal energy from one substance to another due to the temp
differences between the two substances

3) Heat flows spontaneously from matter at a higher temperature to matter at a lower temperature.
4) Energy flow depends on the temperature difference between substances, NOT on the difference
in total thermal energy of the two substances. This flow of thermal energy will continue until both
substances are at the same temperature.
5) What are the heat and thermal energy units of measurement?
Joule (j) for amounts of energy expressed in chemistry. Kilojoules used for smaller units. Calorie used to
express the amount of energy it takes to increase the temp of one gram of water by one degree Celsius.

★ Endothermic and Exothermic (Extra Help Video 1, Help Video 2)

6) Energy is gained or lost in the form of heat during chemical reactions.
7) What is enthalpy and what symbol do we use to represent it? (H) used by chemists to
understand the state of the system as energy is transferred.
8) When heat flows into matter, what happens? Enthalpy and temp increase.
9) When heat flows out of matter, what happens? Enthalpy and temp decrease.
10) Reactions that absorb energy from their surroundings, resulting in a net increase in energy and
+q are called endothermic.
11) Reactions in which there is a release of energy to the surroundings, resulting in a net decrease
and -q, are called exothermic.
12) The amount of energy absorbed by an endothermic reaction depends on what 2 factors? the
amount of reactants and the difference in the potential energy of the reactants and products.
13) List 3 examples of endothermic reactions: sweating, baking a cake, photosynthesis.
14) The amount of energy released by an exothermic reaction depends on what 2 factors? the
amount of reactants as well as the difference in the potential energy of the reactants and
products.
15) Give 3 examples of exothermic reactions: coffee cooling, exploding rocket, chemical heat
packets.
16) The change in enthalpy (ΔH) in a system is equal to the heat gained or lost between the system
and its surroundings under constant pressure.
17) When heat is gained in a system, q is positive. When heat is lost from a system, q is negative.
★ Enthalpy and Potential Energy Diagrams (Extra Help Video)
18) In exothermic reactions, enthalpy is negative but in endothermic reactions, enthalpy is positive.
The positive or negative sign of enthalpy also relates to the slope of a the line on a potential
energy diagram.
19) How do potential energy diagrams differ between endothermic and exothermic reactions? In an
exothermic reaction, the products have less potential energy than the reactants had. In an
endothermic reaction, the products end up with more stored potential energy than the reactants.
20) Due to the increase in enthalpy between reactants and products, endothermic reactions have a
positive/upward slope in their potential energy diagrams.
21) In exothermic reactions there is a decrease in enthalpy between reactants and products which
creates a negative/downward slope on a potential energy diagram.
22) What is activation energy and why is it needed? The minimum amount of energy colliding
particles must have for a chemical reaction to occur. Chemical reactions release and absorb
energy, but they also require some activation energy to break the bonds of reactants to make
new products.
