Fish & Chips Reading Workbook

Global warming will cause sea temperatures to rise, decreasing the oxygen levels in ocean water. This will make it difficult for fish like cod and haddock to survive. As a result, these popular fish for fish and chips may disappear from chip shop menus in the future. Rising ocean temperatures will also negatively impact many marine animal species. They will likely face extinction or shrink in size as the decreased oxygen levels impact their ability to thrive.

C. Reading
Read the following text.

Fish and chips: Cod and haddock under threat

from climate change

Do you love fish and chips? If the answer is yes, we've got
some bad news. The classic cod or haddock in crispy batter
could be off the chip shop menu in the future because of
climate change, according to a new study.
Rising sea temperatures will cause there to be less oxygen in
the water meaning the fish will struggle to survive.
Researchers looked at different sized sea creatures in the
Antarctic, and discovered that when oxygen in the sea went
down, fish and other creatures got smaller.
Professor John Spicer, a marine zoologist at the University of
Plymouth, has spent more than 30 years examining the effect
of climate change on sea life. He said: "Over the last 50 years,
the oxygen in our oceans has decreased by around two to five
percent and this is already having an effect on species."
Professor Spicer also warned that many marine animals will
shrink in size or face extinction. "This is obviously a major
cause for concern," he said. "Many large species will almost
certainly be the first casualties of our warming, oxygen-poor
ocean." (184 words)

_____ _____ _____ _____ _____

•rubbish •inhale •drift •including •shaving

C. Reading
Read the following text.

On Sunday, a sperm whale was found dead floating along the

shore of Kapota Island, Wakatobi, Southeast Sulawesi. The
news shocked both Indonesians and the international
community.
A team comprising researchers from the Academy of Marine
and Fisheries Community in Wakatobi, the World Wildlife
Fund (WWF) and locals found 115 plastic cups, 19 hard
plastic pieces, four plastic bottles, 25 plastic bags, six wood
splinters, two rubber sandals, one nylon sack, and more than
1,000 pieces of plastic rope inside the animal’s stomach. The
total weight of the garbage was 5.9 kilograms.
Plastic is especially harmful to whales due to their way of
eating. Whales eat by opening their mouth and sucking in the
water in their path, which usually contains krill and tiny fish.
However, whales can’t tell the difference between krill and
plastic.
This is probably what happened to the poor sperm whale in
Wakatobi. And this probably happens to many other whales
and sea creatures in the ocean: mistaking plastic as their food
— if they don’t get trapped by plastic waste altogether. (175

two spiders are sure to make you squeal … with delight.
Recently discovered in Australia, these two tiny peacock
spiders – a species named for the “fan” on the male’s
abdomen that looks similar to the brightly colored bird’s
plumage – have unusual, bold markings.

But, that’s not all that makes these spiders stand out:
They dance, too! To get a female’s attention, male
peacock spiders perform a mesmerizing mating display,
doing everything from a one-legged leg boogie to an
elaborate tail wiggle. So even if you’re afraid of
arachnids, you have to admit that these crawlers are
more cool than creepy. (107 words)

C. Reading
Read the following text.

Visit the African park that inspired “The Lion King”

The animators of Disney’s The Lion King traveled to a

park with dramatic landscapes in Kenya’s Great Rift
Valley to get a feel for, as Mufasa puts it, the great circle
of life. When visitors to Hell’s Gate National Park reach
the sweeping cliffs carved by a prehistoric lake that
gives the park its name, they’ll discover that Pride
Rock’s real-life inspiration is no less majestic.
The fact that you won’t actually see Simba (which
means lion in Swahili) is the park’s secret advantage: the
lack of predators means you can take in savannas and

30
come face to face with giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and
warthogs on your own two feet—or better yet, on
bicycle wheels. Hell’s Gate is one of the only places in
East Africa where you can hike the totality of a park. You
can even go on a biking safari—a far cry from peeping
animals through a safari vehicle’s roof.
Roughly 26 square miles in size, the park is situated in
the Great Rift Valley, a jagged tectonic tear that
stretches from Lebanon to Mozambique and cracks the
continent in two by a few millimeters every year. This is
what makes Hell’s Gate a geological marvel worth
visiting: towers of rock that provide rock climbing
opportunities for adrenaline junkies and hiking trails
that wind around a gorge formed by ancient, raging
waters. (227 words)

Would you sleep in a transparent capsule hanging off the
side of a Peruvian mountain? That's the idea behind the
spectacular Skylodge Adventures Suites, glass lodges
precariously situated on the side of a cliff in Peru's Sacred
Valley. If you're brave enough to stay, these crystalline pods
are accessible only after climbing 400 meters (about 1,300
feet) of the rock face or hiking a daring trail featuring a zip-
line network.
Once you settle down for the night, you're treated to
impressive panoramic views of the wild valley below and, at
night, the Milky Way. The motivation behind these dramatic
lodges was to offer "a unique experience that reconnects
guests with nature or make them realize what really luxury
can be," Natalia Rodriguez, the SkyLodge manager, tells CNN
Travel.
The suites are the brainchild of adventure company Natura
Vive -- who want their guests to embrace their inner
adventurer: once you're ready to leave your suite, you can
zip-wire down to the ground below.
Inside these 24- by eight-feet pods, guests are treated to
views worth marveling over-- alongside four beds, a dining
area and a private bathroom. The beds have down pillows
and quilts, ensuring you'll sleep well, if you aren't distracted
by stargazing. Don't worry though -- the pods are crafted
from aerospace aluminum and weather resistant
polycarbonate -- so Natura Vive promises they are secure
and guests are safe. 231 words - Adopted from (Street, 2018)
